Tóth, L.: Provisional check-list of Hungarian mayflies (Ephemeroptera)
Therefore these catalogues deal with many species which are expected to turn up in the Hungarian fauna. The present-day Hungary is not an independent zoogeographical unit but an inseparable part of the Carpathian Basin, which is a veritable zoogeographical area in Central Europe. There is close relationship and constant connection of the hydrous fauna within this zoogeographical area, based on the common watersystems and some climatic, geographical and fauna-genetical factors. Nowadays the new intensive faunistical surveys require the summary of all earlier results, but in my opinion the published data on mayflies and the collected material of our museum is not adequate enough for a catalogue or a comprehensive zoogeographical or faunistical assessment, However, I think that the available data is adequate to give a provisional check-list of the Hungarian Ephemeroptera. This faunistical study was supported by the Hungarian Natural History Museum where an independent Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera collection has been established. Pollution and permanent loss of natural water habitats endangers our Ephemeroptera fauna. There are also taxonomical problems concerning the Heptageniidae genera, especially Ecdyonurus, Heptagenia and Rhitrogena, therefore investigations in this group are of great importance. The check-list is based on the material of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest and the Bakony Natural History Museum, Zirc. The specimens of the collections were identified by PAZSICZKY, PONGRÁCZ, PUTHZ, TÓTH and ÚJHELYI. Abbreviations: A = Austria; species living in the territories Burgenland, Lower Austria, Steyr and Upper Austria which have watersystems partially in common with Hungary and the Carpathian Basin, Cz = Czechoslovakia; species living in the Northern Carpathians and Slovakian parts of the Carpathian Basin. HU = Hungary; species living in the present-day Hungary. O = Out of the Carpathians but situated near to the Carpathian Basin. R = Roumania; species living in the Eastern and Southern Carpathians and the territories inside of the Carpathian Basin having watersystems in common with Hungary. U = Ukraine; species living in the North-Eastern Carpathians and the Zakarpatye area. Y = Yugoslavia; the species living in the neighbouring territorries of Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia which have watersystems partially in common with Hungary. Exp. = species expected to occur in Hungary. SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS Families Genera Species HU Exp. HU Exp.
