ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARICI Tomus 84. Budapest, 1992 p. 33-53 Waldstein and Kitaibel types in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest by D. KOVÁTS, Budapest KOVÁTS, D.: Waldstein and Kitaibel types in the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest. -Annls hist-nat. Mus. nam, hung. 1992, 84: 33-53. Abstract - 83 WALDSTEIN and KITAIBEL (W. et K.) types are elaborated, which are deposited in the Herbarium Kitaibelianum - one of them in Herbarium Wolnyanum - in the most valuable part of the Herbarium Carpato-Pannonicum in the Botanical Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. These species were described and painted in WALDSTEIN'S and KITAIBEL'S Descriptiones et Icônes Plantarum Rariorum Hungáriáé (1799-1801, 1802-1812). Revision of the taxa and the most important synonym names and valid names are given. With 1 figure. Today when the taxonomical elaborations and revisions are booming again, the types and the original specimens are of great importance. Increasing interest in the types is indicated by the loaned herbarium material as well, and more attention is focused on the Herbarium Kitaibelianum. All the original specimens of WALDSTEIN and KITAIBEL (W. et K.) and the KITAIBEL (KIT.) types are deposited in this collection, except for some missing species. PÁL KITAIBEL was a botanist of European fame, and an outstanding natural scientist. A lot of publications appeared about KITAIBEL'S work and life, 124 publications were mentioned by JÁVORKA in 1957. The whereabouts of the types was not questioned in the earlier works, as it was expected that the original specimens are in KITAIBEL'S herbarium. Only a few new publications deal with the whereabouts of W. et K. types; e. g. CHRTEK & SKOCDOPOLOVÁ (1982), STAFLEU & COWAN (1988). The Herbarium Kitaibelianum consists of 14,702 sheets (JÁVORKA 1926, GOMBOCZ 1936), deposited in the Botanical Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. This herbarium includes the scientific documentation of WALDSTEIN'S and KITAIBEL'S Descriptiones et Icônes Plantarum Rariorum Hungáriáé (1799-1801, 1802-1812) - further referred to as Icones (FEKETE & KOVÁTS 1974). It is obvious that all the original specimens, which were described under WALDSTEIN'S and KITAIBEL'S authorship, and the KITAIBEL types (KIT.) as well can be found in this collection. The elaboration of type specimens was started in our Herbarium Carpato-Pannonicum, and some publications already dealt with the types of the Herbarium Kitaibelianum (KOVÁTS 1975, 1982, 1984). Four WALDSTEIN and KITAIBEL types, namely, Cynoglossum umbellatum W. et K. 1805 VIII. No 15, Onosma arenaria W. et K. 1812 XLVI. No 19, Onosma stellulata W. et K. 1805 VIII. No 72, Symphytum cordatum W. et K. 1802 VIII. No 50, were designated as types from the Boraginaceae family from the Herbarium Kitaibelianum (KOVÁTS 1975), they are actually lectotypes. Earlier the "List of Kitaibel's plants" (JÁVORKA 1957), and the "List of plants which were discovered by Kitaibel" (TUZSON 1918) were published. The authors have included into these lists not only KITAIBEL'S taxa but those species as well which were described
