Mus, natn. hung. 1990, 82: 25-37. Abstract - Up to now only sporadic Lower Jurassic brachiopod fossils were known from Lókút. During a new, bed-by-bed collection, rich Lower Sinemurian fauna has been found. This is the richest brachiopod fauna of the Mediterranean region, proved by ammonites. A palaeoenvironmental model can be reconstructed on the basis of exact palaeoecological examinations, which refers to the resedimented , basin-margin characteristic of the sequence. Finally the article provides information about the . stratigraphical range of the found species and the geographical distribution of faunas similar to the Lókút's one. With 11 figures.. Introduction- The Paleontological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and the Paleontological Department of the Eötvös Loránd University in the summer of 1987 organized a fossil collecting camp in North Bakony, 1 km east to the village of Lókút (Fig. 1). Besides the experts of the two institutes, 15 students attended the one-week collection. The selection of quarry was influenced by the fact, that while we know the rich Upper Sinemurian and Pliensbachian brachiopod fauna from the Bakony, we know only a little about the Lower Sinemurian brachiopods. The majority of the significant Sinemurian faunas known from the literature, can be sorted into three groups: - the exact age of the fauna is not known for the lack of ammonites, - the Sinemurian fauna was collected as a whole, even the lower part of the Pliensbachian also, - the Upper Sinemurian age is proved by ammonites. The fact that the Lower Sinemurian age of the fauna is determined by ammonites indicates the significance of the examined fauna. Description of the section A continuous sequence from the lowest Jurassic to the lowest Cretaceous was exposed in the trench made by the Hungarian Geological Institute on the occasion of the Mediterranean Jurassic Meeting in 1969. The Jurassic layers of the Lókút Hill were mentioned by TELEGDI-ROTH (1934) for the first time, its fauna was examined by KOVÁCS (1936) and GËCZY (1976) in details. GÉCZY (1971, 1971a, 1972) published studies about the Sinemurian ammonites. KONDA (1970) made the sedimentological examination of the section and GALÁCZ & VÖRÖS (198.9) published general sedimentological information. The Lower Sinemurian Pisznice Limestone rests on the Hettangian shallow sublittoral Kardosrét Limestone with unconformity and significant facies difference. From this formation to the end of the sequence the facies is basinal. The detailed section of the collected Pisznice Limestone consists of more
