the irregularis lineage deriving from N. fraasi. The behaviour of the septal lines and the highly developed central pillar cone make however, their belonging to the globulus — variolarius lineage originating from N. deserti, more likely. There is some resemblance in septal spacing here, too. The present writer considers this latter to represent a stronger relationship. For this reason, the species of the N. anomalus — stellatus group are regarded as standing closer to N. deserti. The deepest member of the group is N. anomalus appearing in the upper part of the Lower Lutetian. After releasing the Upper Lutetian

Both species are characteristic of the Upper Eocene only, but whereas the former occurs in desposits of the Mediterranean region, the latter abounds in the deposits of the so-called boreal sea that had got isolated from the Mediterranean by Late Eocene time, having represented a somewhat cooler-water environment.
