VÁSÁRHELYI, Budapest Abstract — Description of Aradus horvathi sp. n. from the Mts. Cozia (Southern Carpathians) and comparison with Aradus anisotomus PUTON, 1879. With 16 figures. Through the kindness of two Transylvanian entomologists, Dr. E. Schneider and Dr. B. Kis, I received five specimens of a strange Aradus species. The specimens represent a species belonging to the betulae-group but standing quite alone in the Central European fauna. Nevertheless, a comparison with the northern A. anisotomus PUTON, 1879 revealed their close relationship especially expressed in the morphology of the external genitalia. All the drawings were made by using drowing apparatuses. The relative length of the antenna! and rostral joints is given in the percentage of the total length. Aradus horvathi sp. n. (Figs. 1—6, 9, 13, 14, 16) Belongs to the betulae-group of the typical subgenus. Within the group medium-sized, almost unicolorous dark brown, with the exception of membrane densely covered by granulation. Legs and antenna without obvious white tubercles characteristic for most of the species in this group. Head 1.18 (çf) or 1.16 ( 9 ) times as long as wide across eyes (Fig. 1). Clypeus long, narrow reaching about 1/4 of antennái joint 2. Antenniferous tubercles pointed, postocular tubercles directed posteriorly, pointed, tip yellow. Vertex with a U-shaped deep and smooth depression marking former ecdysia! cleavage line. Eyes strongly protruding laterally. — Antenna (Fig. 2) long, joint 1 small, piriform, brown. Joint 2 the longest, longer than 3+4, basal 1/4 narrow, second 1/4 strongerly thickening, apical half only finely so, brown. Joints 3 and 4 subequal, club-shaped, slightly thickening towards apex, joint 3 yellow except basally, joint 4 brown. Relative length of antenna! joints 1 to 4 as 10: 48.7: 20: 21.3 (çf) or 9.4: 50.4: 19.4: 20.8 (9). — Labrum longer than wide, oblong, epipharyngeal projection elongated triangular. Rostrum reaching anterior 1/4 of mesostrenum. Relative length of rostral joint 1 to 4 as 7.3: 41.5: 26.8: 24.4.—Pronotum 2.32 (çf) or 2.41 (9) times as wide as long (Figs. 13, 14). Anterior margin more or less straight with two protrusions at the anterior end of median carinae. Lateral margin not roughly denticulate but with longer teeth at anterolateral edge. Posterior margin smooth, sinuate at scutellum. Median carinae reaching from anterior to posterior margin, almost straight. Mediolateral carinae reaching from posterior margin to reversed U-shaped smooth callosities. Lateral carinae represented by wide, flat, long tubercles. Surface densely granulated, dark brown, tip of longer teeth on lateral margin yellowish. — S c u t e 11 u m dark brown, 1.25 (çf) or 1.23 ( 9 ) times as long as wide, shield-like, with lateral margin curling upwards in posterior 2/3. Disc granulated, with a median longitudinal, flat tubercle but without carina formed by granulation. — Hemelytra almost reaching paratergites (çf) or middle of tergite 7(9)- Corium with granulated veins and lateral margin. Basal dilation rounded, anterior part curling dorsally. Hemelytra dark brown, some transverse veins, the basis of the main veins of membrane and anteromedian angle of membrane yellowish. — Legs long, slender, hind femur and trochanter not fused. Pretarsus without pulvillus. Legs dark brown, densely granulated, femur and tibia incidentally with solitary white (yellow) tubercles. — Abdomen oval more rounded posteriorly on males. Dorsolaterotergites with posterolateral edges only slightly protruding, densely granulated, 3 6 about as long as wide. Sulci bordering dorsolaterotergites and tergites 1 +2—6 distinct, as well as those bordering tergites 2-3, 6-7, 7-8. Sulci between tergites 3-4, 4-5, 5-6 laterally distinct, medially marked by different sculpture only. Remnants of all three larval abdominal scent gland openings present. Tergites 1 +2 fused, with transversal ridge, median and mediolateral apodemesand 9 Természettudományi Múzeum Évkönyve 1984
