second "real maxima". Here can be found longest internodes among the measured material (40—70 mm). These longest internodes are the first ones on the branches. Here appears a difference between the two Lithospermum species, and it seems to be constant. The longest internode of Lithospermum arvense L. is nearly without exception the first one on the branch (Fig. 5)., while the longest internode of Lithospermum purpureo-coeruleum L. is the uppermost one of the relative main axis before branch (Fig. 6). The lengths of internodes which branch out at the bottom of Lithospermum arvense L. frequently show curves with three maxima and the maximum in the middle is the smallest. These branches at the bottom of Lithospermum arvense L. also have secondary branches. The third maximum is the highest one after the point of branches similarly to the branches of the upper part of the shoot (Fig. 7). It seems that this kind of distribution of internode Fig. 7.
