Canis adustus SUNDEVALL, 1846 Specimen: Addis Ababa (1 çf, .S). - Measurements: PM*-L 14.1, M 1 +M 2-L 18.0. Notes : This specimen was erroneously identified by its collector, M. GAJDÁCS, who was an experienced naturalist, as C. aureus. This was probably due to a casual examination of the skin, not presented with the skull, which in Ethiopian examples of the species lacks both the white tail-tip and the conspicuous pale lateral stripe (YALDEN & al., 1980). Canis aureus LINNAEUS, 1758 Specimen: Addis Ababa (1 sex?, .S). - Measurements: CIL 140.8, PM 4-L 14.4, M*+M 2 17,9, PM 4-PM 4 45.2. Notes : The measurements of PM 4-L and M 1 -t-M 2-L fall clearly in the cloud of points for C. aureus in the bivariate scatter diagram given in YALDEN & al. (1980: 183, Fig. 2). This is the common jackal of the plateaux. Sight record (A. D.) : a road-kill, probably of this species, near Debre Zeit, and one out in full daylight near Meki. Canis mesomelas SCHREBER, 1775 Specimen : Awash valley (1 O, .S). - Measurements: PM 4-L 15.8, M 1 +M 2-L 16.7, PM 4-PM 4 45.7. Notes : This specimen could also be readily identified using the scatter diagram given in YALDEN & al. (opp. cit.). Sight records (A. D.): several pairs in the Awash National Park, one roadkill between Welenchiti and Metahara. Vulpes pallida (CRETZSCHMAR, 1827) Specimens : Assab* (3 sex?, M -f-S). Notes : There are few records of this species in Ethiopia, and none of them recent. The specimens were obtained by K. KITTENBERGER in 1906. Viverra civetta SCHREBER, 1776 Specimen : Modjo (1 çf, .S). Notes : The Civet is known from a number of localities in the Rift Valley, where Modjo is situated (YALDEN & al., 1980). Sight record (DR. G. DEMETER): near Arba Minch. Genetta genetta LINNAEUS, 1758 Specimen : "Abyssinia" (1 sex?, .S). Notes : This specimen was also obtained indirectly from M. GAJDÁCS. An illegible handwriting on the label could in fact mean the locality, but it is very unclear. A note included with the the skull says, "red-spotted". It is not clear what was meant by this note, since the skull is clearly not that of a G. rubiginosa. Atilax paludinosus mitis (THOMAS, 1903) Specimen: Harar (1 sex?, .S). - Measurements: CIL 98.4, ZYGB 57.6, LINB 18.9, BBC 35.6, no external measurements given by the collector, M. GAJDÁCS. Notes : This is a geographically isolated subspecies, distinct for its small size and relatively small teeth. Herpestes (Galerella) sanguineus RÜPPELL, 1835 Specimens : Gibdo* (1 sex?, .S); Harar* (1 $, S +S). - Measurements: WAB 24.2-24.2, C-M 2-L 21.7 -22.8, CIL 59.5-64.56, ZYGB 28.4-30.6; no external measurements for the Harar specimen.
