Prószyński, J.: Salticidae (Araneae) from Mongolia

Remark. The species was described from the SW side of the Karakorum Range between 2000-4500 m. It is almost forgotten and not identifiable from the original description, but has been recently revised by M. ZABKA (unpublished materials) which permitted identification of the Mongolian specimens. Closely related to Chalcoscirtus martensi ZABKA, 1980: 360-362, ff. 1-9, described from both Central Nepal and Hissar Mts. in Tadjikistan. There is also some resemblance of ç to Chalcoscirtus glaciális (CAPORIACCO, 1935) (PRÓSZYNSKI, 1976, ff. 364-366) known from Karakorum Mts. Description of male Very small (céphalothorax 0.87-1.00 mm, abdomen 0.81-1.00 mm), dark, gleaming spider. Céphalothorax dark brown mottled grey, eye field black. Abdomen dark brown, gleaming, covered dorsally by harder shield-scutum. Legs gleaming olive brown with darker lateral surfaces, have dark stripped appearance. Clypeus narrow, olive greish brown, pedipalps have the same colouration. There are no contrasting colour marks over the body. The main character is tiny embolus twisted into corkscrew ot the top of a "fleshy" process (fig. 12). Such structure is rather unusual, comparable only to Ch. martensi. where however, the process is more inclined. Tibial apophysis long, broad, with curved dorsal edge (fig. 13). Description of female (New) Also tiny (céphalothorax 1.33 mm, abdomen 1.33 mm in both specimens), with dark brown gleaming céphalothorax. Eye field covered with small adpressed setae arranged diagonally and meeting angularly along median line. Clypeus very narrow, eyes I gleaming green, surrounded with whitish short and flat setae. Sparse whitish setae (about 101 overhang ventral edge of clypeus. Abdomen with indistinct pattern of whitish spots (fig. 14), rudimentary on darker specimen. Whitish marginal line along anterior edge of abdomen. Epigyne rather simple (figs 15-16) but accessory gland opening area (fig. 17) seems to be of special diagnostic importance, although difficult to see. Dendryphantes chuldensis sp. n. Material : Holotype çf (with palpus separated in a small tube) : Mongolia, Südgobi aimak: Ostrand von Zöölön ul Gebirge, 58 km WSW von Somon Bajandalaj, 1500 m, 16. VI. 1967 (Nr. 806). Exp. Z. Description of male Céphalothorax dark brown, with anterior part of eye field covered with white scales making a triangle spot pointed posteriorwards. Clumps of white scales and adpressed setae scattered beneath eyes lateral, along dorso-lateral edge of thorax and on the foveal area, but do not form any continuous lines in the studied specimens. Abdomen now bald dorsally with a few scattered white setae giving no clue to the possible colour pattern in a fresh specimen; anteriorly on the apex there are some white scales and sparse bristles. Legs fawnish brown with femora I-IV dark brown; basal halves of metatarsus I and tibia I also darker brown ventrally and laterally but not dorsally. This pattern repeats on same segments of legs 11—IV, but less pronouncedly. Clypeus brown with sparse dark setae, chelicerae blackish, pedipalps brown. Abdomen ventrally dark brown with two lighter brown lines near lateral margins, covered very sparsely but regularly with white scales. Pedipalpal organ (figs 18-20) differs from other species by having broad, plate like conductor, longer than thin, sp ! ne like embolus. In other Palaearctic species the relation of size of these parts is opposite. Length of céphalothorax 2.28 mm, abdomen 2.85 mm.
