ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARICI Tomus 72. Budapest 1980, Medon croaticus sp. n. (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae) from Yugoslavia by L. TÓTH, Budapest Abstract — Description of Medon croaticus sp. n. from Croatia (Yugoslavia). With 5 figures. During the identification of the Paederinae collection from the Carpathian Basin of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest one new Medon species was found from Croatia. The species can be separated from the other Central European species by the construction of the male's 6th ventral segment and by the aedoeagus. Although similar to M. petrochilosi COIFFAIT, 1970, the species can be separated from the latter by its slender body, the sculpture, the characteristic black setae at the apex of male's 6th ventral segment and by the build of its. aedoeagus. Medon croaticus sp. n. (Figs. 1-5) Moderately slender, head dark pitchy-black, thorax lighter castaneous-brown, abdomen brown with the posterior margin of the segments distinctly lighter, rufescens. Mouthparts, antennae and legs reddish-yellow. Length 4,2 mm. Head subquadrate, slightly longer as broad. The compound-eyes moderately convex, scarcely prominent, temples practically parallel, posterior angles rather briefly rounded, posterior margin subconvex. Anterior margin of front above the insertion of antennae forming small shining tubercles. Antennae inserted near mandibles, genae short. Temple long, three times longer then diameter of compound-eye. Dorsal surface of head shagreened, shallow, large punctures confluent, coriaceous, covered with fine reddish-yellow pubescence, sides with some long, black setae. Ventral surface of the head shagreened, but a little more shining than dorsal surface. Gular sutures fused. — Antennae elongate, reaching to base of thorax, 1st segment as long as the 2nd and 3rd combined, thickened, 2nd shorter than 3rd, both obconical, thickened apically, 4th longer than 5th, cylindrical, 6th to 10th quadrate, 11th larger than former, 11th elongate, apex pointed. All segments finely pubescent, with some long, black setae. L a b r u m moderately broad, anterior margin furnished on either side of the middle with a small tooth, teeth separated by a rounded slight emargination. Penultimate segment of maxillary palpi elongate, obconical, narrowed at base and thickened towards the apex, last segment very small, scarcely visible. Labial palpi short. Mandible rather slender, curved, pointed, inner margins with three teeth. Neck nearly as broad as half breadth of head, sculpture as on head, with some rather large punctures. — Thorax scarcely broader as long (19:18), sides practically parallel, anterior angles widely rounded, sides straight, posterior angles rounded, base narrowly bordered, lateral borders visible in dorsal aspect from base to middle. Surface covered with rather close, umbillicate punctures and finely coriaceous ground-sculpture, with fine reddish-yellow pubescence, in the middle with narrow, shagreened, but rather shining line, sides finely granulated, with some long, black setae. — Prosternurn triangular, scarcely extended between anterior coxae, apex with short fine keel, laterally slightly impressed. Prosternai epimeron as a triangular plate fused with epipleura. — Elytra a little broader (22:21) and distinctly longer (18:25) than thorax, sides straight, practically parallel, humeral angles briefly rounded, suturai border moderatelly dark, prominent, suturai stria narrow and shallow, postero-external angles slightly, widely rounded, apex bordered. Surface shining, covered with fine, shallow punctures and reddish yellow pubescence, laterally fine granulated, with some long black setae. Scutellum visible, shagreened, small, triangular. — Mesosternum short, extended a little between intermediate coxae. Metasternum large, apex with groove between posterior coxae. — Abdomen longer (35:25) than elytra. The 1st ventral segment keeled in the middle. The 1st to 3rd dorsal segments transversally impressed at bases. All dorsal segments covered by reddish-yellow pubescence, sides with some long black setae. Puncturation Ann. Hist.-nat. Mus. Nat.
