Szujkó-Lacza, J., Kováts, D. ; Rajczy, M.: Revision and numerical evaluation of the Hungarian Spergularia species (Caryophyllaceae)

Notes — We had to cite here the original description of this species pre- and ante-Linnean including LINNÉ (1762), because a group of authors believes LINNÉ described it in 1753, and others that only in 1762, an it is strongly discussed even today (cf. RAUSCHERT 1977). The first description of LINNÉ may refer to two or three species of Spergularia (S. rubra and S. salina), therefore, it is not valid, while the second (1762) contains some errors, or more exactly, insufficient description among the characters. The characters of Spergularia media were given first in an acceptable form by PRESL (1826). Spergularia rubra (L.) J. et C. PRESL (1819) — Syn.: Alsine Spergulae facie minor Bauch. Pflanzenf.3. 1. b. 45, 1889. Though Spergularia rubra can also be found under different names it was characterized sufficiently by LINNÉ (1753). Later on, specialists, as LEBEL (1868), KINDBERG (1863) described several new species, compared with LINNÉ (1753, 1762), of the genus Spergularia (LEBEL I.e.), or of the genus Lepigonum (KINDBERG 1. c). Among these some new species resemble S. rubra, species differ from it in other characters like the surface of the seed. A number of specialists was confused by the fact that LINNÉ (1. c.) described S. rubra and a campestris also and the latter was characterized insufficiently. This was the source of an other mistake, and consequently numerous specialists used the name of "campestris" as a species name (ALLIONI 1785, ASCHERSON 1864, GORSCHKOVA 1936), or as a subsp. (ROUY & FOUCAUD 1896, BRIQUET 1910), sometimes it occurs in other genera as a species name (PAX 1889). Much later, besides LINNÉ'S description (I.e., p. 423): "Arenarie foliis filiformibus, stipulis membranaceis vaginantibus", PERSOON (1805, p. 504) characterized the species ".. .fol. filiformibus internodo brevioribus. ..". In 1819 these two descriptions were well combined by J. and C. PRESL, as Spergularia rubra. Spergularia salina J. et. C. PRESL (1819) — Syn.: Alsine atheniensis var. marina Sampaio Lista herb.
