Figure 2 shows that the Belorussians (ANTONYUK 1975) and the North-Caucasus groups : the Andicis, the Ginuchcis (GLADKOVA & RAMAZANOV 1977) and the Osscts (PETRENKO 1977) are the closest to the Hungarian samples. Consequently, the dermatoglyphical complex of the Hungarians is on the whole "Caucasoid". The Preuralian groups, placed to the left from the Hungarian samples, are characterized by a distinguishing „Mongoloid" dermatoglyphical complex. These findings agree well with TÓTH'S hypothesis (1977) that the taxonomical position of contemporary Hungarians is closely connected with the different components of the European race stock. This is confirmed not only by somatological data, but also by the data of ethnical dermatoglyphics and odontology. According to anthropological data it is not only the recent population of Hungary that is relates to the Caucasoid race, but also the ancient Hungarians who came to the territory of the Danube Basin in the tenth century (by data of craniology). According to TÓTH, the theory of the Preural (Kama-Belaya) ancient homeland is not confirmed. The process of formation of morphological peculiaryties in proto-Hungarians was taking place more to the south. And in dermatoglyphical traits, as we already noted, the Hungarian samples are nearer to the peoples of Northern Caucasus than to the pre-Urals groups. References ABEL, W.
