Kovalev, V. G.: Mongolian species of the Platypalpus albiseta-group (Diptera, Empididae)
Genitalia (Figs. 7-9) large, globose as in pygialis CHVÁLA, but differ from those of pygialis in having of apical projection of left periandrial lamella wide and rounded (Fig. 7). — Length 2. 1 mm, wing 2.5 mm. Q unknown. I have seen two females from Südgobi aimak labelled "30 km SWS Zogt-Ovoo, 11.8. 1971, leg. M. KOZLOV" and "Bulgan, 20. 6. 1972, leg. T. PUSTOVOJT", which seem to belong to P. argenticapillatus, but 1 am not yet fully confident in the identity of these two specimens with the new species. Holotype rf: Bajanchongor aimak, Oase Echin gol, 11-14. 8. 1969, leg. KERZHNER (deposited in the Zoological Institute, Leningrad). Note. — The new species resembles P. albiseta, P.pygialis, P. niveocapillatus CHVÁLA, and particularly P. leucarista sp. n. and P. albisetoides CHVÁLA. Only P. leucarista (and perhaps P. albiseta) of these four species occur in Mongolia. All these species differ from P. argenticapillatus in having blackish posteroventral bristles on fore femora. P. albisetoides and P. leucarista have humeral calli thinly greyish dusted and arista longer, twice as long as antennái segment 3. P. niveocapillatus, P. albiseta and P. pygialis have wings clouded brownish. Moreover, P. niveocapillatus is distinguished from P. argenticapillatus by its polished frons; in P. albiseta and P. pygialis apical sections of R 4+5 and M 1+2 very convergent apically, at least 1.7 times as wide apart at middle than at tip. 4. Platypalpus sp. prope albiseta PANZER — Archangaj aimak, Tövschrulech, 23. 8. 1975, 2 9 > leg. PUSTOVOJT. Bulgan aimak, 11 km W von Somon Bajannuur am Südrand des Sees Bajan nuur, 1000 m, 24. 7. 1968 (No. 1145) leg. KASZAB, 19- — These specimens appear to answer to P. albiseta known from Europe and the Caucasus, but the species resembling P. albiseta can be identified precisely in the male sex only. 5. Platypalpus leucarista sp. n. (Figs. 10-13) Black species with polished mesonotum and most of pleura; humeral calli thinly dusted. Mid femora 1.5 times as deep as fore ones. cf (holotype). Head dusted as in argenticapillatus; occiput with a triangular patch behind ocelli. Frons very narrow, below middle narrower than front ocellus, slightly widening above, and immediately before ocellar triangle narrower than distance between hind ocelli. Bristles blackish; vi/a little longer than oc. Antennae black; segment 3 four times as long as wide; arista slightly thickened, twice as long as segment 3. Palpi yellow with brownish base, clothed with whitish pile, apically with a brown bristle. — Thorax mostly polished black; pleura with the same dusted patches as in argenticapillatus but the difference being that humeral calli except for inner margins and whole of prothorax finely dusted; fore margin of mesopleura dusted throughout (Fig. 10). Mesonotum almost bare; acr and dc hardly visible, sparse; acr biserial on a broad median stripe, i.e. a little narrower than bare line between acr and dc. Dc uniserial, ending behind in one bristle. Bristles rather fine, large bristles dark brown. 2 bristles and 1 additional hair in notopleural depression. — Wings slightly brownish clouded especially on costal half. Veins dark brown. Venation as in P. argenticapillatus. Squamae brownish with yellow fringes. — Legs yellow; fore tibiae, fore and mid tarsi and last three segments of hind tarsi blackish; fore femora above, mid and hind tibiae and two basal segments of hind tarsi not so dark, brownish; mid tibiae about tip darker than about base. Fore femora 2.2 times as deep as tibiae, with 2 rows of hairs beneath; hairs of anterior row pale, longest on basal half (almost half as long as femur is wide); posterior row with a few blackish fine bristles among other hairs; the longest bristles nearly as long as femur is wide. Mid femora 1.4-1.55 times as wide as fore ones, in front with 4 or 5 brownish erect bristly hairs, anteroventrally with a row of about 10 brown bristly hairs, posteroventrally with a row of 7 long (slightly longer than femur is wide) and other shorter black bristles. Hind femora beneath with 2 rows of hairs as in P. argenticapillatus, but hairs of anterior row bristle-like and brown at least on apical half. Tibiae as in P. argenticapillatus. — Abdomen dark brown, shining, front margins of tergites a little grey dusted at sides. — Genitalia (Figs. 11-13) large, globose as in P. albisetoides (CHLÁVA 1973, Fig. 6), but right cercus much shorter than left one, sclerite between cerci with hook-like apical process bent towards left (P. albisetoides with this process bending towards right); apical projection of left periandrial lamella turned caudo ventrally (Fig. 11) (in albisetoides pointing caudally). 9 (paratype). Palpi with yellow apical bristle. Mid tibiae not darkened. Tarsi paler; mid metatarsus brownish yellow; hind metatarsus not darkened, yellow (these distinctions between a single male and a single female may be due to intraspecific variability inrespective of sex). — Sternites
