Tsuneki, K.: H. Sauter's Sphecidae from Formosa in the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Hymenoptera)

Specimens examined: 13 9 35 0 X , Takao, 14, 20, 26, VI, 7, 8, 15, 20, 26, 27, 29, 31, 1-15. VII, 5, 8, 9, 12, 14, 18, 28. VIII, 3. IX. 1927; 2 9 1c/, Kagi, 17, 18. VIII 1907; 1 rf, Akau, 15-20 XI. 1907; 12 9 5 çf, Taihorinsho, VIII, IX, X. 1909 (1 çf, VI. 1910); 1 9, Formosa. Remarks. This species was formerly considered to be a variety of the preceding species. Distribution is similar, but extended far northwards up to Japan and Korea. 29. Liris (Niirliris) japonica manilao (ASHMAED, 1904) (TSTJNEKI, 1967b*, p. 34 (partim) ; 1967f, p. 389; 1971d*,p. 7; 1974, p. 612; HANEDA, 1972, p. 4; MUROTA, 1973, p. 118). — Specimens examined: 3 9 S çf, Takao, 11. VI, 16. VII, 12, 14. VIII. 6-20. XII. 1907; 1 9, Kosempo, 1908; 1 çf, Ins. Lambeh, I. 1908; 3 9 Taihorinsho, VIII, X. 1909. Remark s. The differences between the Formosan and the Japanese populations of this species were amply related and discussed in my 1967b paper. In a paper, which is not as yet published at the moment of writing of this report, I separated the Formosan population from the Japanese one at the subspecifie rank basing upon the confirmation of its identity with the southern population which had been known a,sL. manilae ( ASHMEAD) . 30. Liris (Cratolarra) pitamawa (ROHWER, 1919) (TSUNEKI, 1967b*, p. 41; 1971d*, p. 2; 1974*, p. 012; HANEDA, 1972, p. 3; MUROTA 1973, p. 118). — S p ecimens examined^ 9 b çf, Takao, 14, 15, 20. VI, 1, 15, 20. VII, 14, 16. VIII, 1907; 2 9, Kagi, 10, 28. VIII. 1907. Distribution. The Philippines, Formosa and Thailand. 31. Tachytes saundersii BINGHAM, 1897 Tachytes saundersii BINGHAM, 1897, p. 189; PULAWSKI, 1975*, p. 317. Tachytes formosanus TSUNEKI, 1966d, p. 12; 1967*, p. 44; 1967f, p. 390; 1971d*, p. 7; 1974. p. 615; HANEDA, 1972, p. 4; MUROTA, 1973. p. 117. Specimens examined: 2 9) Taihorinsho, IX. 1908. Remarks. In dealing with specimens of this species from Thailand in my 1974 paper I cast doubt that T. formosanus m. may be a synonym (a local race) of T. saundersii BINGHAM known from India. This was recently confirmed by W. J. PULAWSKI (1975) by the re-examinatioh of the type of T. saundersii. 32*. Tachytes hengehunensis TSUNEKI, 1967 (TSUNEKI, 1971d*,p. 8; HANEDA, 1972, 4; MUROTA, 1974, p. 118). — S p ecimens examined:2 9, Takao, 23. VI, 8. VIII. 1907. 33. Tachysphex tinctipennis CAMERON, 1904, p. 301; PULAWSKI, 1975, p. 311. Tachysphex bengalensis: TSUNEKI 1967b*, p. 49 (partim, nec CAMERON). Tachysphex bengalensis japonicus: TSUNEKI, 1971d*, p. 11, 12; HANEDA, 1972, p. 4; MUROTA 1973, p. 118. Specimens examined: 1 9> Takao, 26. VI. 1907 ; 1 9 » Taihorinsho, X 1909. Distribution. N. India, Philippines and Formosa, and widely spread over the Pacific Islands. Remarks. Recently it was clarified by PULAWSKI through his re-examination of the types that the species called Tachysphex bengalensis by WIILLIAMS (1928), KROMBEIN (1949) and myself (1967b, 1971d) was different from the true bengalensis CAMERON (1889) and in reality it was Tachysphex tinctipennis CAMERON ( 1904) which was rather similar to T. nigricolor (DALLA TORRE) ( = Larrada nigricans SMITH = Tachysphex japonicus IWATA).. According to my investigation T. tinctipennis thus identified is considered to fall within the specific range of T. nigricolor and the new status is proposed.
