Ujhelyi, J.: Data to the systematics of the sections Bulbosae and Caespitosae of the genus Koeleria, XI.

Arealgeographically, the Retyezát Massif harbours a number of Balkan species as relicts. The final relegation of this interresting plant can be decided only by recourse to live material investigation. The scope of the present paper does not allow a critical treatment of Subsp. K. eriostachya PANCIC 2. var. carniolica (KERN.) DOMIN, of 3. var. engadensis DOMIN of Subsp. II. Schroeteriana DOM., and its varieties. Koeleria carniolica KERN. is a truly existing species, just as good as Koeleria eriostachya PANC. A detailed analysis would involve the comparative investigation of taxa inhabiting the Illyrian area, an undertaking similar in scope to the present one. The taxon Subsp. Schoeteriana DOMIN is mixed ; its Pyrenean exemplars are, e. g. identical with Koeleria pyrenaica (DOM.) UJH. In general, Koeleria carniolica KERN, differs from Koeleria eriostachya PANC. principally by having truly glabrous innovational leaves, that is, the smaller and larger macro-hairs are completely absent from the intercostal zone on the underside of the epiderm, similarly to the situation found in the members of the Series Ciliatae UJH. If they do appear (as in HUTER et A. PORTA'S specimen : Venetia, dit. Beilumens, in parti supremis montis Serva, sol. calcar., 18/7 1873; Schedula Domini: K. eriostachya PANÖ. V. typica! — relegated in K. DOMIN'S publication under Subsp. I. K. eriostachya PANC. 1. var. typica DOM. [BP]), they are scattered, and only the minute micro-hairs appear, while the margins bear robust and erect cilia. Koeleria carniolica Kern, is the member of a distinct Series, standing near, by the evolutionary point of view, to Koeleria montana (HAUSM.) D. T. (Plate I, Fig. 6; Plate IV, Fig. 3). As. could be seen, several examples have again been marshalled, similar to those shown in the evolutionary critique of the great-species Koeleria splendens PRESL given in my lecture at Tihany in 1970 (cf. the intruductory remarks, and ÚJHELYI 1972). The present result al so stress the importance of correct views in evolutionary investigations, and the preclusion of subjectivism. They also imply that there is no irreconcilable antagonism in every case between Linneus's concept on the changelessness of species and the idea of evolution, if the former is not interpreted in the rigid approach prevailing hitherto. Species which had survived the hardships of a long past still live unaltered, together with their descendants, evolved from and now belonging to the same genus with them. References ACHTAROV, B.
