Entomological Explorations in Ghana by Dr. S. Endrődy—Younga. 18. A New Genus and Species of Asteiidae from Ghana (Diptera) By L. PAPP, Budapest Collecting extensively in Ghana, Dr. S. ENDRŐDY-YOUNGA gathered also a vast amount of Diptera, presenting it to the Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest. The material, conserved mainly in alcohol, probably totals half a million specimens, but I found only very few asteids in it. Representatives of the family, mostly of unknown life-histories, are captured but rarely, and, owing to their fragile state, they usually come in a poor shape to the hands of the specialist. However, the exemplars originating from Ghana are almost wholly intact, three of them representing also a highly interesting new species. It is my agreeable duty to express my thanks to Dr. S. ENDRŐDY-YOUNGA for the valuable material. An arista gen. nov. Third antennái joint disciform, arista represented only by its obtuse base. Third antennái joint elongately ciliate, the single hairs longer than rudiment of arista. Second antennái joint with one bristle above. Inner and outer orbitals robust, upper orbital and postverticals absent, ocellars weakly developed. Orbitals with a row of thin, moderately long cilia. Thoracic chaetotaxy : 1 pair of anterior and 1 pair of posterior notopleurals, 1 pair of anterior postalars and 1 pair of dorsocentrals. Lateral scutellars hardly more than one-fourth of api cals in length. Mesopleura glabrous, but 2 thin and considerably elongated sternopleurals present. Alar eosta not broken, extending to median, subcosta rudimentary, not reaching costa, r 2+3 terminating visibly in r 3 . Veins r 4+5 and m strongly convergent. Posterior cross-vein present, cross-veins rather approximate, enclosed distance only one and a half times as long as posterior cross-vein. Basal cross-vein, anal cell, anal vein not even in traces present. Alula very narrow, nearly linear, anteriorly with few cilia, basally glabrous, hence evolvement of alular region showing a transitional picture between the subfamilies Asteiinae and Sigaloessinae but alar venation and shape doubtless referable to the latter one. Type-species : Anarista endroedyi sp. n. Anarista endroedyi sp. n. (Figs. 1—2) Head as high as long. Postverticals absent, outer and inner verticals robust. Proclinate ocellars weak, backed by some minute hairs. Ocellar plate well differentiated. Upper orbitals absent, substituted by a row of moderately long cilia on orbitals. Third antennái disciform, arista represented only by its base (Fig. 1) but this, too, hardly discernible among the long hairs of antenna! joint 3. Anten-
