Specimens of the second brood in Hungary are paler than those of the first generation. The head and the thorax are definitely grey, the abdomen lighter, with alternating thicker greyish and narrower yellowish rings, the abdominal tuft light, yellowish, whereas the specimens of the nominate form have a lighter head and thorax, their abdomen entirely suffused with yellowish (the annulation is, however, present), and the abdominal tuft more vividly yellow. Genital organs. The male sexual organ agrees in essentials with that of the nominate form, except for the more strongly sclerotized pulvillus (Fig. 1, A, B). The valvae are broad with a strong excision, the pulvillus thin and straight (thick and curved in the nominate form), the costa spinose, the sacculus robust, the uncus strong. The anellus is long, of a peculiar, bifurcate form. The saccus is rather incrassate. The aedoeagus is more or less biscuit-shapped, medially constricted, rounded only in one extremity and sharply truncate in the other. The cornutus is very robust, dark, elongately rhomboidal to lanceolate, bigger in the Hungarian race than in the nominate form. On the basis of the above features and geographical range, I consider the form of the Buda area as a distinct subspecies, and name it Gnophos variegata cava ssp. n.
