For an ethnogenetical evaluation of the material and the investigation of the populations in the Late Roman Period, the clarification of the chronological grouping and the anthropological study of the earlier populations, especially those of the Sarmatians and the Germans, were most important, with special emphasis on the desirability of more comparative material being available from areas which might be brought into connection with the ethnic groups of the Late Roman Period.
