epimere III. Setae poststernales short, internae just reaching insertional points of externae. Three pairs of nearly equal caudal hairs present, internae and externae 1 adjacent, externae 2 slightly removed. Legs: Leg 1 consisting of four joints, tibiotarsus (Fig. 16) with a small, thin, straight, hardly discernible claw. Among solenidia, co 4 strongly incrassate, short. Configuration of leg 4 shown on Fig. 18. Type-material : 1 ex. (Holotype : T— 782p- 67) : No. 985. 6 ex. (Paratypes: T—783p — — 67): data as for Holotype. Holotype and 4 Paratypes in the collection of the Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum; 1 Paratype in that of Dr. G. RACK, Hamburg, and 1 Paratype in the collection of Dr. K. KUROSA, Tokyo. Remarks : The extremely characteristical tarsus 1 (small, straight claw and incrassate, short a> 4 ) separates the new species from all known congeners. Scutacarus sterciolus sp. n. Length: 190-235 u., width: 165-195 pi. Dorsal side (Fig. 19) : Surface of body strongly punctate. Clypeus wide, clypeal hairs arising on a transversal line, all of equal length. Other body segments carrying merely 3 pairs of hairs, setae lumbales externae and setae sacrales externae absent. Setae dorsales longest of all dorsal hairs. All hairs ciliate. Ventral side (Fig. 21): Surface also strongly punctate. Hairs of anterior sternal plate long, setae coxales I internae not excelling by either length or ciliation. Setae coxales II externae incrassate, smooth, spiniform. Sternum and ventrum alternately constricted and expanding, moniliform. Setae poststernales arising on a transversal line. Setae poststernales internae originating anteriorly to externae, much removed from one another. Setae poststernales externae essentially longer than internae, but failing to reach posterior margin of body. Three pairs of caudal hairs present, of nearly equal length, but internae and externae 1 longer, apically recurving and spiralling. Legs: Tibiotarsus of leg 1 with claw. Solenidium oo x only slightly thicker than co 3 . Tibiotarsus of leg 4 (Fig. 20) considerably elongated, apically attenuating, emitting merely 6 hairs. Hair "p" longer than hair "s", terminally recurving and spiralling. Type-material: 1 ex. (Holotype: T-784p— 67): No. 1006. 8 ex. (Paratypes: T — — 785p — 67) : data as for Holotype. Holotype and 6 Paratypes deposited in the Zoological Department of the Hungarian Natual History Museum, 1 Paratype in the collection of Dr. G. RACK, Hamburg, and 1 Paratype in that of Dr. K. KUROSA, Tokyo. Remarks : A most remarkable species, easily distinguishable from all other known Scutacarus taxa. On the basis of its elongated tibiotarsus 4, it might be relegable to the longitarsus-gvowo, but the tibiotarsus bears merely 6 hairs. The reduction of the dorsal hairs refers it to the deficiens-gvowg, but all other features differ from the characteristics of this relationship. Scutacarus tacensis MAHUNKA, 1964 Locality: No. 1005. Scutacarus tackei suborbiculatus RACK, 1964 Its occurrence in dung is quite striking; until now it was known only from ante)» nests and forest litter. Locality: No. 1006.
