Table 2. : Proportion of Children and Adults in the Cemeteries of the Central Danubian Basin from the Avar Period and Arpadian Age 2. Child mortality had been lower bv reason of more favourable conditions of life; 3. A number of dead children had not been buried in cemeteries. Of the three possibilities, the first one can be easily excluded. True, shallower graves, and thus a certain proportion of child graves, are generally destroyed by the effects of agricultural work, but since the graves had commonly been dug deeper by an average 50—70 cm in the Avar Period than in the Árpádian Age, it is quite obvious that demolition affected to a greater extent the Árpádian Age cemeteries than those from the Avar Period. If the lower number of child graves were caused exclusively by soil erosion, one would expect to find, by inference from the depth of the grave, more child graves in the Avar Period cemeteries and less in those of the Árpádian Age. The second possibility, namely that the lower rates of child mortality had been due to the more favourable conditions of life in the Avar Period, can also probably Children (0-14) Adults (15-x) 7o /0 Szentes-Kaján (Korek, 1943) N = 433 18 82 Üllő I.
