Bottyán, O.: Data to the anthropology of the Hun Period population in Hungary

Superior view : rhomboid, in absolute measurements medium long, wide, brachycranial. Lateral view: porion—bregma high; hasion—bregma medium high; the index 17:1 is very high, the 17:8 a high value. Glabella II (Broca), forehead steep (90°). Pterion area of a narrow H-shape, right processus mastoideus strong, massive. A small bonelet (parietal notch bone) above processus mastoideus on each side. Skull with nine other, more or less large, ossa wormiana : eight on sutura lambdoidea, and one anteriorly of lambda on sutura sagittalis. Occiput slightly curvoocipital. Protuberantia occipitalis externa rather strong (Broca 3). Suprema well discernible above linea nuchae superior, crista sagittalis strong, sharp. Condyles broken on basal portion. Medium wide forehead with a weak arcus superciliaris. Entire facial height medium, upper one also. Owing to very wide zygomaxillary, index of upper face euryen, as also entire face. Orbital slightly rounded, angular, hypsiconch. Nasal root medium wide, rather deep. Nasal bones narrow, with a slightly convex curve. Nose medium wide: mesorrhinian. Spina nasalis anterior strong (Broca 3), nasal margin with fossa praenasalis. Fossa canina filled. Entire facial angle and median facial angle orthognathous ; alveolar profile angle prognathous. Alveolar arch very wide, long; palatum narrow, deep, palatal index very small. Mandibula massive, strong, high. The facial profile data have been made available by Dr. T. TÓTH.* In the evaluation of the facial profile, seven main characteristics are usually considered. The respective values in this case are as follows: Nasomalar angle 146.2; zygomaxillary angle 137.7. These are the characteristically high values of the Mongoloids, revealing the flatness of the face. The medium value of the DS (dacryal height) takes an intermediate place between the Europoide and Mongoloidé values. The DS:DC index is medium, also on the borderline of the Europoide and Mongoloidé values. The smallest nasal depth SS is most interestingly 4.3, a wholly Europoide value, the same as the SS:SC index. The angle of nasal projection (75/1), 23°, is a small value, characteristic of the Mongoloids. Thus the Europoide nose hardly projects from the Mongoloidé face. The 0.1 mm depth of the fossa canina is also a Mongoloidé feature. In its character-complex, the face is therefore Europo-Mongoloide. The stature can, owing to the unfortunately broken state of the long bones, not be interpreted ; the remnants speak for an individual with weak bones. No. 66.1.1, Budafoki st. 78, XI distr. (grave without serial number). A badly preserved cranium : of the facial part only the right zygomaxillary bone, the orbital area, and a part of the maxilla remained, the left side of the face is missing. The left frontal bone and the os parietale of the skull are broken, the basal section is also injured. Female. Senile. Sex shown by weak processus mastoideus, sharp orbital margin, high forehead, gracile bones, whereas age indicated by ossified sutures on inner surface, and absorbed alveoli. All remained teeth strongly worn; abrasion: 3. Only some few reliable data could be read from the post mortem deformed cranium. Calotte oval, greatest length 172 mm, medium; greatest width 140 mm, broad; index: brachycranial. In lateral view medium high; basion —bregma 130 mm. * I wish to express my thanks also in this place to Dr. T. TÓTH for his help in obtaining the facial profile data.
