Szunyoghy, J. ; Nagy, E.: The scientific results of Hungarian zoological expeditions to Tanganyika 11. Data to the body measurements of East African big game on the basis of material collected during the third expedition
E = height of shoulder ; extending from the tip of the hoof, or in predators from the paw as resting on the ground, of the fore limb to the most projecting point of the chest ; the tape is to be smoothed out along the body of the animal. In the case of a body lying on its side, the fore leg should be arranged into its normal position, or the readings will yield false data. In reading the measurements B, C, D, it is the transverse between the two terminal points which is measured, hence the tape is not to be smoothed or aligned along the body of the animal. Neck circumference measurements: 1. Circumference immediately behind the head; 2. Circumference in the middle of the neck; 3. Circumference immediately above the chest. Trunk girth measurements: 4. Fore girth at the height of the hind edge of the fore limb; 5. Middle girth; 6. Hind girth, immediately in front of the hind limb. Measurements 5 and 6 were usually not read owing to the strongly modifying effects of the rapid bloating of the body. These two measurements can, and should, be taken immediately after the shooting of the animal to obviate the danger of erroneous readings. Eore limb circumferences: 7. Circumference at the height of the elbow; 8. Circumference of the middle of the forearm; 9. Circumference of the carpal joint (knee); 10. Circumference of the metacarp in the middle; 11. Circumference of the fetlock (at the height of the convex portion above the upper end of the toes). Hind limb circumferences: 12. Circumference of the gaskin; 13. Circumference of the tarsal joint (hock); 14. Circumference of the metatarsus in the middle (shank) ; 15. Circumference of the fetlock (at the height of the convex portion above the upper end of the toes) ; 16. Circumference at the stifle. Weight data: 17. Complete body weight, with the head and the trophy (horns) included; 18. Entire body weight with the trophy included, but without the internal organs; 19. The weight of the entire stripped-off skin; 20. The weight of the heart without coagulated blood. The reading of the above measurements is explained and illustrated on Fig. 1. The measurements obtained are submitted in a summarized form in the following Table, with the earnest hope that we have thereby contributed to a knowledge of the corporeal characteristics of East African big game.
