This is due to the fact that the English authorities at that time had not permitted the stay for more than 24 hours for the leader of the expedition in the territory of Kenya ; hunting thus became there impossible. The expedition had to move to Tanganyika, where the rhinoceros, owing to the strongly decreased stock, is under protection. On the other hand, the hunting of elephants would have taken more time than was available for the expedition, hence it had to abandon this project. It were thus that the main task of the second expedition was the collecting of the rhinoceros, elephant, and giraffe, which it had wholly fulfilled. The body measurements taken are as follows : A = length of body ; B == length of tail ; C = length of hind foot ; D = length of ear ; E = height of shoulder. Neck circumference measurements : 1. Circumference immediately behind the head ; 2. Circumference in the middle of the neck; 3. Circumference immediately above the chest. Trunk girth measurements : 4. Fore girth at the height of the hind edge of the fore limb; 5. Middle girth; 6. Hind girth, immediately in front of the hind limb. Fore limb circumferences : 7. Circumference at the height of the elbow; 8. Circumference at the middle of the forearm; 9. Circumference of the carpal joint (knee); 10. Circumference of the metacarp in the middle; 11. Circumference of the fetlock (at the height of the convex portion above the upper end of the toes).
