MAIRE subvar. vestita DOMIN, 1956 (MA, nr. 9780) Description of the leaf epiderm : On the abaxial side of the innovational leaves, the surface structure of the epiderm is as follows : the costal and the intercostal zones are slightly different in the senile leaves. The costal zone is 5—7-seriate, the cells of basic tissue are narrow, densely alternating with vestigies of small macro-hairs, the pili are absent or occurring only sporadically. The macro-hairs are not uniform, intermingling with silicabodies, these latter are cubicoid, the cellular walls sinuous ; the 6 —8-seriate intercostal zone is highly similar to the costal zone, but also with stomata in one or two cellular rows: in the juvenile leaves the costal and intercostal zones are indistinct, the vestiges of the small macro-hairs alternate densely with the-cells of the basic tissue, the silica-bodies are only sporadically present, they are cubicoid, sometimes (Santa Colomba de Gomosa) the macro-hairs are longer. The leaf is vestitous due to these dense macro-hairs. Stoma ta extremely minute (Plate II, Figs. 1, 2). The shortness of the cells of the basic tissue, and thus also the density of the indumentum, obviously reflect the xerothermous Mediterranean habitat. A similar configuration of the leaf epiderm can be observed also in Koeleria andreánszkyi UJH., or Koeleria pauneroi UJH. , also inhabiting the Iberian Peninsula.
