Móczár, L.: Kieffer's Mesitius and Epyris-Types in the Hungarian Natural History Museum (Hymenoptera, Bethylidae)

There are some differences between the description and the holotype: "Tête allongée, de moitié plus longue que large" correctly: nearly as long as broad, length (from clypeus up to occipital margin) : breadth (between the outer margins of eyes) = 33:27; "yeux deux fois aussi long que les joues ou que leur distance du bori occipital" in fact: eyes as long as the distance of one from occiput (9:9) and as broad as genae below the eyes; "Scape égal aux trois articles suivants réunis; ... 3 e seulement un peu plus long que gros;" correctly: scape longer than segments 24-34-4 together, segment 3 one and a half times as long as broad. In addition to KIEFFER'S description: body with outstanding white hairs; head closely granulate, almost coriaceous, elongated in front with sides converging before, the eyes rounded behind them. Eyes very convex, protruding above the level of head; ocelli rather small, posterior ocelli about equal length of occiput and POL (11 : 10), distance between posterior ocelli longer than the distance between one of them and the median ocellus ; occiput slightly margined ; clypeus transverse, rounded on both edges, with a central keel which extends back to the antennái sockets; mandibles with 3 small teeth ; scape curved at its proximal 1 / 4 , flagellum thickened at segments 6—9, length (and breadth) proportions of antennái segments 1 — 13 = 14(4) : 5(3) : 4.5(3) : 3(3) : 3 : 3(3.5) : 3(3.5) : 3(3) : 3 : 3 : 2.5(2.5) : 2.5 : 5. Pronotum except collar, about as long as its anterior width (17 : 18) with parallel sides, slightly concave, broadened at the back; mesonotum very narrow, only a slightly longer than its posterior connecting part to scutellum (5 :4) ; between the lateral parts of mesonotum and scutellum there are two circular impressions ; scutellum longer than mesonotum; between scutellum and propodeum there is a curved transverse furrow, dorsal surface of propodeum twice as long as mesonotum; length of pronotum (except collar): mesonotum: scutellum: propodeum (dorsal surface) = 17 : 5 : 6 : 10; sides of thorax finely Striated. Legs rather stumpy, fore and mid femora and tarsi of about equal lengths, fore metatarsal segment as long as the other tarsal segments together (9 : 9) ; mid and hind metatarsus distinctly shorter than the other segments (7 and 11 = 10 resp. 13); fore and hind femora about two and a half times longer than its breadth (17 : 7, 21 : 8); length of tibiae 1 — 3 = 15 : 17 : 23; fore metatarsus at base strongly curved and thinner at apex; inner side of hind tibiae distally flattened and marked with an inverted "V" shaped dark line. First abdominal tergite very sparsely punctured, third-sixth segments very finely alutaceous. Mesitius hungaricus KIEFFER Mesitius hungaricus KIEFFER, 1906, Spec. Hym., 9. p. 409 çf Mesitius hungaricus : 1908, KIEFFER, Gen. Insect., 76. p. 19 Mesitius hungaricus : 1914, KIEFFER, Das Tierreich, 41. p. 302 çf KIEFFER wrote of the original material: "Patrie. Hongrie: Budapest (P. Maroth), Novi (HORVÁTH), Hűvösvölgy (SZÉPLIGETI), Trieste (GRAEFFE)." There is only one specimen from the original material in Mus. Budapest with the following labels: "Novi HORVÁTH, 1900", "45", "Mesitius hungaricus" in BIRÓ'S writing (red label) (right tibia and tarsi missing, mouth parts and genitalia on celluloid), consequently this specimen can regarded as lectotype, Hym. Type Nr. 62. KIEFFER'S description is to be corrected thus: "3 e (article) double de 2 e " in fact 3 rd antennái segment is only one and a half times longer than 2 nd segment; "mesonotum a punctuation très fine ou chagriné seulement" correctly: mesonotum very finely punctured; "metanotum . . . avec 3 arêtes" in reality: propodeum beside the three
