Genital pores common or separated by one or two annuli. Seminal vesicle and vasa deferentia forming long, simple, open loop. Type-species: Hirudo complanata LINNAEUS, 1758 Key to the Species of the Genus Glossiphonia Johnson, 1816 1 (6) Male and female genital ducts opening into a common pore. 2 (3) 4—5 pairs of testes. 3 pairs of eyes situated on annuli 6., 7., and 8. Dorsal sur­face very finely granulate, but without sensory papillae. Only one postanal ring. Greyish-white. Hosts: freshwater snails. Length: 7—10 mm, width: 3—4 mm. Distribution: Tasmania tasmaniensis INGRAM, 1957 3 (2) 6 pairs of testes. 4 (5) Body entirely smooth, without papillae. Postanal ring absent; 3 pairs of eyes situated on rings 5., 7., and 8. (location and development extremely variable!) Dorsal side of sucker without radially arranged dark striae. Hosts: freshwater snails. Length: 5—10 mm, width: 3—ő mm. Distribution: Europe, North Ame­rica, India, Central and East Africa heteroelita (LINNAEUS, 17(31) 5 (4) Dorsal surface of body with 7 longitudinal rows of smaller to greater papillae. One postanal ring. 3 pairs of eyes on annuli 6., "., and 8. Dorsal side of sucker with radially arranged dark striae. Hosts: freshwater snails ( Ampullar ia, Paludina, Lymnaea) , aquatic beetles (Dytiscidae, Hydrophilus ). Length: 6—12 mm, width: 3—3.5 mm. Distribution: India, Burma, Indonesia, Uganda weberi BLANCHARD, 1897 6 (1) Male and female genital pores separated by one or two rings. 7 (14) Male and female genital pores separated by one ring. 8 (9) Only 2 pairs of eyes present, on annuli 5., and 6; also 2 postanal rings. Sensory papillae absent, small tubercles hardly elevated, decurrent in 4 longitudinal rows on dorsal surface of body. 6 pairs of testes. Anterior half of body bluish­grey, posterior half dirty yellowish. Host: Bythinia australis. Length: 14—33 mm, width: 4.6 mm. Distribution: Australia intermedia GODDARD, 1909 '9 (8) 3 pairs of eyes present; postanal ring absent or only one present. 10 (11) Dorsal surface of body with 6 longitudinal rows of sensory papillae. 3 pairs of eyes situated on annuli 2., 3., and 6. One postanal ring present. Dorsal sur­face greyish-blue, with a median longitudinal dark pigment stripe, ventral side pale violet. Host: unknown. Length: 18.5 mm, width: 6.8 mm. Distribution: Argentina mesembrina RINGUELET, 1949 11 (10) Dorsal surface of body without segmental or sensory papillae in macroscopic view. 12 (13) One postanal ring and 6 pairs of testes. 3 pairs of eyes situated on rings 2., 3., and 4. Sixth pair of coeca of crop, directed posteriorad, emitting numerous (usually 11) small diverticula. Conserved specimens of a fleshy colour, without any pattern. Host: unknown. Length: 10 mm, width: 5 mm. Distribution: Australia, Tasmania australiensis GODDARD, 1908 13 (12) Postanal ring absent; 5 pairs of testes. 3 pairs of eyes situated on annuli 5., 6., and 7. Sixth pair of coeca of crop, directed posteriorad, emitting only 4—5 di­verticula. Conserved specimens greyish-white, with segmentally arranged spots in median line. Host: unknown. Length: 5.5 mm, width: 3 mm. Distribution: New Caledonia novaccaledoniae JOHANSSON, 1918 14 (7) Male and female genital pores separated by two annuli. 15 (16) First 2 pairs of 3 pairs of eyes situated in a transversal line on a single common ring, namely on ring 4., third pair on ring 5. Cephalic end slightly distinct. Dorsal skle of body without papillae. No postanal ring. Host: freshwater snail (Taia intha). Length: 6—6.5 mm, width: 1.2—2.8 mm.
