Description of the leaf epiderm : On the abaxial as well as the axial sides of the innovational leaves the cells are large. The cellular walls are sinuous. In the senile leaves, the costal zone is 4—6-seriate, the cells of the basic tissue are narrower than those of the intercostal zone, also elongate, sporadically alternating with silicabodies (these latter are rather oblong) ; the rows of silica-bodies are joined on both sides by a cellular row of the basic tissue with narrow walls and without silica-bodies ; due to the medially absent sclerenchyme fascicle, the intercostal zone is highly developed, generally 13-seriate, the cells are large, wide, the stomata appear in 2—3 rows on both sides of the zone, they are impressed; the epiderm of the juvenile leaves is similar to that of the senile ones, except that the silica-bodies of the costal zone alternate regularly with the cells of the basic tissue ; twin silica-bodies are frequent; the intercostal zone is only 6—10-seriate, the cellular rows are narrower than in the senile blades ; the epiderm of both kinds of leaves lack the hairs. Thus the epidermal structure is highly similar to that of its progenitor, Koeleria degeni DOM.,
