Description of the leaf epiderm ; On the abaxial side of the innovational leaves the cells are small, narrow, but larger than those of Koeleria pseudoglauca SCHUR. The cellular walls are straight, hardly sinuous. The costal zone is 4 —6—seriate, the cells extremely narrow, the cells of the basic tissue alternating with silica bodies; these latter are cubic or oblong: the intercostal zone is 8-seriate, but occasionally a vein is missing, and then it is 16-seriate. The cells of the basic tissue are wider than those of the costal field, rarely and sporadically alternating with the small vestigial hairs of the macro-hairs. There are no stomata on the underside (Plate III, Fig. 1). The plant is, as I have already emphasized in the short characterization of the Series, not allied to the members of the Series Cristatae UJH . For one thing, the habitat conditions are highly different. Koeleria cristata (L.) PERS. em. BORB. does not attain the alpine or subalpine regions, while, on the other hand, Koeleria transsilvanica SCHUR does not descend to lower elevations. The subglabrous leaves, its stature, the aristulate lemmae, etc., unambiguously separate our plant from the former one. Ever since described by F. SCHUR, it was considered as a subspecies of Koeleria gracilis (L.) PERS., or as a simple variety. The plant is of a similar stature in Transylvania as Koeleria britannica (DOM.) UJH. in Great Britain, which latter species, as a member of the Series Arenariae UJH., shows but a resemblance to Koeleria cristata (L.) PERS. em. BORB. 26.
