Halász, M.: The microvegetation of the acrothermae of Harkány

Gollerbach, Koshinskaj a&Polianskij (1953, p. 108) relegate the species by the name Gloeocapsa minor (Kütz.) Gollerbach into the genus Gloeocapsa (Gollerbach, in Elenkin, Monogr. Algar. Cyanophyc, Pars Spec. 1, 1938, p. 238). Occurrence : a) On the wall of the spring wells, at times also in masses, of Harkány ; b) The Gellérthegy thermae, Budapest (Halász 1942), the Felix Bath, Nagyvárad (Palik 1949), Hajdúszoboszló (Kol 1932); c) Herkulesfürdő (Strom 1927); Yellowstone Park, N. America (Copeland 1936); Western India (W e s t & W e s t, 1895); Hokkaido, Beppu, Japan (Y o n e d a 1938—42). Chroococcus minutus (Kg.) Naegeli, 1849 Protococcus minutus Kütz., Phyc. Gêner., 1843, p. 168 ; Chroococcus minutus Naegeli, Gatt, einzell. Alg., 1849, p. 46 ; Hansg., Prodr, Algen., 2, 1892, p. 162. Single specimens. Cells with integument attain 12 p, without integument 5—7 p in diameter ; surrounded by colorless, not Iamellated sheaths. Sheath enveloping cells frequently very thin, as figured also by Hansgirg in his description of d) obliteratus Hansg. (1892, p. 162). — The cells in the thermae of Harkány occur both with a wide sheath (as figured by K ü t z i n g, I.e.) and a thin one (as H a n s g i r g's var. obliteratus 1. c). Gollerbach, Koshinskaj a&Polianskij relegate the species into the genus Gloeocapsa, by the name Gloeocapsa minuta (Kütz.) Gollerbach ampl., uniting under this name also the species Chroococcus minutus (Kütz.) Naeg., and Chroococcus helveticus Naeg. (1953, p. 107). Drouet&Daily, however (Butl. Univ. Bot. Stud., 1956, p. 13), draw the species under Coccochloris stagnina Sprengel (Fl. Mantissa, 1, 1807, p. 14). Occurrence : a) Very frequent on the walls of the spring wells and the basins in Harkány b) Óbuda, Budapest (Halász 1942), the Zsóry bore, Mezőkövesd (L o v r e k o v i c h, 1955) ; d) Kuripan, Sumatra (Geitler&Ruttner, 1936), Yellowstone Park, N. Amer ica (Copeland 1936), Beppu, Toyama, Gihu, Japan (Y o n e d a 1938—42), Kamchatka (Boye — Petersen 1946). Chroococcus schizodermaticus W. West, 1892 var. iucoloratus Geitler, 1933 (Fig. 1) W. West, Journ. R. Micr. Soc, 1892, p. 7, 42, f. 61—63 (type) ; Geitler, Arch. f. Hydrobiol., Suppl. 12, 1933, p. 623. Specimens occurring in Harkány agree with var. incoloratus described by Geitler. Sheaths surrounding cells colorless, but yellowish-brown in type. Lamellation of integuments well visible, outer lamellae often peeling off. Cells without sheaths 5—11 p in diameter, single cells with integuments may attain even a double size. Single cells of 4-celled colonies, after division, 3—4 p, with integuments 8—9 p in diameter. The Chr. schizodermaticus variety described by Ercegovic torm Croatia by the name f. pallida (Acta Bot. Univ. Zagreb, 1, 1935, p. 77), also having a colorless sheath, will probably belong to var. incoloratus. D r o u e t & Daily identify the form var. incoloratus fa. paucirostratus, described by Geitler (Geitl. &Ruttn., 1936, p. 380—381) and disposing of an unlamellated sheath (or but two or three layers), with Anacystis thermalis Dr. & Daily (Butl. Univ. Bot. Stud., 10, 1952,p." 221). Occurrence : a) Infrequent on the walls of the thermal cooling basins in Harkány; d) Java (Geitler&Ruttner 1936).
