On 24 July, it appeard in front of its turret constructed on 22 July, at 9 : 40, it disappeared in it but soon emerged again and flew to and fro before the wall like its fellows, searching for nesting places. At 11 : 12, it began to excavate a fresh nest, abandoning it at 11 : 54, when it flew away. It was still hovering before the loess wall at 14 : 35. Its absence for the whole day of the twentythird and its omission to provision the cell by larval food could not have been the result of the lack of observation. The constructed nest
