Bohus, G. ; Babos, M.: Notes on the occurrence in Hungary of Russula species, with regard to their range in Europe

that it fructifies mainly in the association Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum in Hungary. On the basis of our home material, the color scale of the cap must be extended. We have found, namelv, that though the colors vinous, lilaceous red, lilac dominate, there occurred, aside of fungi with this coloration, and in the same locality, specimens of lilaceous green, olive green, indeed, fleshv brown and olive brown caps too. Concerning the color of the caps, we have yet to mention that Schaeffer, having found a completely whitish-yellowish variety (maybe according to him identical with R. lacteass. Sing., near Munich), states that it is very difficult to establish the rate of distinctness of varieties in a species as rare as this one. A similar material was found near Szakonyfalu (Com. Vas), in a PinetoQuercetum association, on 12 August 1958. (There was collected also the typical R. lilacea in Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum mediostiriacum luzuletosum, in the same area on the next day.) The cap-color of the specimens growai in PinetoQuercetum was whitish to pale yellowish wdien young, turning to ochreous — yellowish ochreous with a slight greenish shade later. The fungi were very fragile and soft. The pattern of the spores were, according to the spore table (Schaeffer, 1952), Id, 2c, and between Id —3d. There are no cystids on the surfaces of the cap and the stem. We regard this whitish-greenish yellow variety as belonging also to R. lilacea. A very frequent Russula species in Hungary. Our home materials, especially those from the Mts. Bükk, display highly varying cap colors : there occur, aside of the tvpicallv yellow and apricot hues, vivid pink with yellow in the middle, pink, pale fleshy, brownish fleshy, flesh red, rosy red tints. Some authors recognize varieties. Their validity, as stated also by Schaeffer, encounters certain difficulties, as their occurrences are very mixed, especially in some areas. The spore pattern seems to be rather constant: 2d, then between 2d and 4e, or 4e (Schaeffer's spore table, 1952). Herb. : 39 data from the areas of the Central Mountains and the Western Transdanubium. Lit.: Bohus (1952), Hollos (1913, 1933), Moesz (1942), Szemére (1926), Ubrizsy (1956, 1959), V i s n y a (1928—29). Sub nom. R. chamaeleontina : Moesz (1942).
