Bohus, G. ; Babos, M.: Notes on the occurrence in Hungary of Russula species, with regard to their range in Europe

Russula fragilis Fr. ex Pers. Frequent in Europe, and one of the most frequently occurring Russula species in Hungary. It is association-indifferent. The late autumnal form, resembling R. atropurpurea, larger than usual and also more compact, is not rare. By our observations made in six constant plots (10x10 m each) in the fall of 1952, it was found, that the larger-sized fruit-bodies developed from the same mycelia which brought forth regular small fungi previously (fig. 1.). Herb. : 33 data from the areas of the Central Mountains and the Transdanubium. Lit.: Bohus (1943, 1952), Moesz (1942), Szemére (1926), Ubrizsy (1941, 1943, 1956, 1959) ; sub nom. R. fragilis var. niveus : Hollós (1913). Mycocoenological survey data (Bohus&Babos 1958) : In the course of coenological surveys, it was found in the following associations, that is, forest types, in the Western Transdanubium : Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum mediostiriacum luzuletosum ; in the area of the Hungarian Central Mountains : Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum caricetosum pilosae, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum melicetosum uniflorae, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum CIadonia facies, LuzuloQuercetum subcarpaticum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum myrtilletosum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum Dicranum facies. Fig. 1. Russula fragilis Fr. ex Pers., the late autumnal form. Russula grisea Gill. Absent from some European areas, but distributed in Hungary. Some of the types of the examined R. grisea material may be separated as varieties. The variation is of the same wide scale as that of jR. alutacea. Characteristics connecting the varieties are the medium stature ; the moderately acrid taste in mainly 9 Természettudományi Múzeum Évkönyve
