Bohus, G. ; Babos, M.: Notes on the occurrence in Hungary of Russula species, with regard to their range in Europe

( — Genisto pilosae-Quercetum petraeae matricum) and in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum myrtilletosum, Babos (1958). Mycocoenological survey data (Bohus&Babos 1958) : in the Mts. Buda : in LuzuloQuercetum subcarpaticum Dicranum facies, 24 Sept., 15, 29 Oct. 1955, Mt. Tökhegy ; in the Mts. Bükk : in Genisto pilosae-Quercetum petraeae matricum, 6 Oct. 1955, in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum myrtilletosum, 6 Oct. 1955, Mt. Balázshegy ; in the Mts. Zemplén : in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, 17 Sept., 7, 24 Oct., 14 Nov. 1958, Mt. Nagykerekhegy ; in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, 17 Sept., 7, 24 Oct., 14 Nov. 1958, Mt. Kiskerekhegy ; in Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum luzuletosum, 7 Oct.. 1958, Osva valley ; in LuzuloQuercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, 17 Sept. 1957, Mt. Nagysomhegy. Russula foetens Fr. ex Pers. It is one of the furthest ranging and most frequent Russula species in Europe. It is common also in Hungary ; an association-indifferent fungus. (The relatively small herbarium material is due to the fact that this common species was rarely collected for herbarium purposes.) Herb. : 12 data from the areas of the Central Mountains and the Transdanubium. Lit.: Bohus (1952), Hollós (1933), K o n c c s n i (1952—53), Moesz (1930, 1942), Szemére (1926), Ubrizsy (1956,1959), Visnya (1928—29). Mycocoenological survey data (Bohus&Babos 1958) : In the course of the coenological surveys, it was found in the following associations, that is, forest types and transitional beech stocks in the areas of the Hungarian Central Mountains : Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum myrtilletosum, Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum Dicranum facies, Genisto pilosae-Quercetum petraeae matricum, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum melicetosum uniflorae, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum poetosum nemoralis, Potentillo-Quercetum (petraea, cerris) pannonicum Cladonia facies, Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum caricetosum pilosae, Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum subnudum. Russula foetens Fr. ex Pers. var. laurocerasi (Melz.) J. Schff, Our observations justify the segregation of this R. foetens form as a variety. Its separation as a species or subspecies on the basis of its allegedly sole constant differentiating character, — the conspicuously cristate spores (Schaeffer, J. 1952, spore table : 9 f ) — is not possible. Nor could this character be maintained as constant, since B ü 1 o w (1956) has found that there may develop spores of a deviating pattern (warty-spinose, reticulate, crested) in the same individual specimen. On the basis of our own observations, we can now state that there may occur, though rarely, R. foetens forms whose spores stand, as concerns their sculpture, midway between the typical R. foetens (Schaeffer, J. 1952, spore table 3 d —4 d) and R. laurocerasi (9 f), their patern being 8 d —8 e. Nor can this form, differentiable solely on the basis of this microscopical feature, be segregated from the species R. foetens by its oecological claims and coenological conditions. It could be collected on the same day in two adjacent stocks of the same plant association (Mts. Zemplén : Mt. Kiskerekhegy, and Mt. Nagykerekhegy, in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, 17 Sept. 1958). Herb. : in the Mts. Buda : in Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum, 21 July 1948, Szépjuhászné, leg. Bohus; in the Mts. Bükk : in silva frondosa, 12 July 1955, Mt. Samassahegy, leg. Bohus&Babos; in the Mts. Zemplén : in Luzulo-Quercetum subcarpaticum fagetosum, 17 Sept. 1958, Mt. Kiskerekhegy, leg. Bohus&Babos; in pineto mixto, 28 July 1959, Mt. Nagykerekhegy, leg. Babos; in Querceto petraeae-Carpinetum pannonicum, 18 Sept. 1958, around Gönc, leg. Bohus&Babos.
