Szunyoghy, J.: The variability of the branch numbers of stag antlers in the Carpathian Basin

1 26-pointer, 3 24-pointers, 5 22-pointers, 19 20-pointers, 48 18-pointers, 125 16-pointers, 218 14-pointers, 154 12-pointers, 49 10-poniters, 9 8-pointers, 4 6-pointers. This order of sequence gives the same result as shown above, namely, a many-tined antler is much too infrequent in the present area of Hungary. And, with reference to 18- or more-pointed antlers, the Comitats Baranya, Somogy, Pest, Tolna come to the fore. Hunting reports on stags shot in the years 1884—1912 also furnish important data. These records are the more valuable for us as they list not only antlers which were sent to displays, and which were therefore presumably fine and selected antler materials, but also those of the large number of stags shot during the several hunting seasons in the period under discussion. Concerning tines, their grouping is as follows : there were listed 2 26-pointers, 5 24-pointers, 23 22-pointers, 84 20-pointers, 275 18-pointers, 921 16-pointers, 2,809 14pointers, 5,696 12-pointers, 6,695 10-pointers, 4,626 8-pointers, 2,196 6-pointers, 575 forked ones, 1,740 spiked ones, and 2,508 others ; a total of 28,154 items. As is to be seen also of this enumeration, — as was also shown above, — 20or more-pointed antlers were really rare in Hungary. We may yet add, on the basis of this large antler material, that also 18- or 16-pointed antlers were infrequent enough. To make possible the comparison of the branch-numbers of foreign stags with those of Hungarian ones, I also insert here a Table. In this, the reader will find the situation concerning the tine-numbers of the antlers of stags shot in the Carpathian Basin in 1881 —1912. (Table 2.) To sum up the results of my investigations, I may state the followings : There was found no antler with more than 28 points in the Carpathian Basin during 77 years (in the period 1880—1957). 20- or more- (inclusively 28-) pointed antlers were real rarities. Antlers of such tine numbers were found in Comitats Baranya, Máramaros, Bereg, Ung, Somogy, Verőcze, Gömör, Zala, and Zemplén. Nor were 18- or 16-pointed antlers frequent in the area of the Carpathian Basin. This is adequately proved by the lists compiled from the data of the years 1884—1912. The most frequent were 10-, 12-, 8-, and 14-pointed antlers. References : 1. Vadász és Versenylap (1857—). — 2. Vadász Lap (1880—). — 3. Nimród (1913—). — 4.
