Horváth, L.: The results of the zoological collecting trip to Egypt in 1957, of the Natural History Museum, Budapest 7. The ornithological results
of 12 specimens between 24 September and 17 November, of which 7 were noted in the Delta (Abu Rawash), 9 at the reservoir of Kom Oshim, 13 scattered over the valley of the Nile from Fayum to Aswan, and 3 at Marsa el 'Alam on the Red Sea. Dunlin (Calidris alpina alpina L.) I noted but a single specimen at Hurghada, on the shore of the Red Sea, on 4 November. The record has no especial interest from the point of view of the autumnal migration of the species. Little Stint (Calidris minuta minuta Leisl.) I met with it in three places in Egypt. I observed 1 specimen at Abu Rawash in the Delta on 24 September, 142 further ones in Kom Oshim on 7, 8, 9, 11, 12 October ; about 300 in the Lake Karun on 10 October, and 4 on the island El Arn in the Lake Karun on 13 October. South of the Fayum district, I sighted it only once, 3 specimens in the Kagug marshes in Upper Egypt on 24 October. The above data show that the passage along the Nile of the little stints is of a rather slow rate ; they descend but to the northern limit of the Fayum till the middle of October, and could not have attained a much southerner latitude even at the end of the month (I travelled from Aswan to Idfu in a S — N direction on 28 October). They take their time therefore, in a suitable place, maybe for weeks on end. Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypolcucos L.) I have not seen it before 23 October, though I made my observations from 2 September to this very day, on the seashore, in the Delta and in the valley of the Nile. I saw the first 2 specimens on the shores of a channel of the Nile between Esna and Thebes on 23 October. I observed a specimen on the Lord Kitchener island at Aswan on 26 and 27 October, probably the same bird on each occasion. It was not visible on the shores of the Red Sea between 31 October and 7 November. Finally, I sighted 2 specimens on the shore of the Nile near Helwan on 17 November. The detailed discussion of its occurrence in Egypt was necessitated by the circumstance that there are hardly any sure records concerning its fall migration in the Region, especially as regards October. Green Sandpiper (Tringa ochropus L.) I noted a total of 27 specimens in the valley of the Nile between 24 September — 24 October. Its dispersion, regarding numbers and localities, was very unequal. I saw a single specimen at Abu Rawash on 24 September, and about 20 specimens in smaller flocks on the reservoir of Kom Oshim between 6—12 October. I observed 1 indvidual on the shore of a channel between Esna and Thebes on 23 October, and 5 other birds in the Kagug marshes near Silsilia. Three specimens were collected. Its occurrence in the Region conforms with our knowledge regarding its fall migration.
