Babos, M.: Notes on the occurrence in Hungary of Lactarius species with regard to their range in Europe

cality, the species being known as birch-mycorrhizal, could only live on beechtrees. Its single datum in Hungary shows that it is just as rare here as in the greater part of Europe, discounting certain areas in Finland and the Soviet Union. Tuomikoski (1953) notes that, of the large white Lactarius species (L. piperatus, vellereus, resimus), L. resimus has the northernmost range, occurring even in Northern Finland. On this ground, its occurrence in Hungary could be expected in no other sites but possibly in forest types on acidic soil of a cold and precipituous microclimate in the Northern and Western borders of the country. Since, according to the statement of N e u h o f f , it was frequently confused with L. cilicioides in literature, prohibiting therefore the analysis of its several data, I have to note that the specimen collected in Hungary corresponds absolutely with the description and figure given by N e u h o f f . Herb. : in Luzulo —Quercetum fagetosum, Mt. Kiskerekhegy, Mts. Zemplén, 17 September 1958, leg. Bohus & Babos. Mycocoenological survey data : identical with aboves (Bohus & Babos 1958). Lactarius chrysorrheus Fr. It is most interesting to compare the conditions of occurrence of this species in Hungary with those of the European data. In its range in Europe, it occurs in Querceto-Carpinetum, in Peryclimeno-Quercetum, and under oaktrees in pine-woods (Neuhoff). According to the rather extensive mycocoenological surveys in Hungary, it is bound almost exclusively to the association LuzuloQuercetum, resembling Peryclimeno-Quercetum. It is a widely ranging but infrequent species. •Herb. : in silva mixta, Sopron, 20 Oct. 1943, leg. Bohus; in silva frondosa, Sopron, 15 Oct. 1952, leg. Bohus ; Sopron, 2 September, 1949, leg.
