in the Jacea subsection, which further contain numerous other subspecies and forms. The basic number of the species group is 11, all the members are probably tetraploids. 37. Centaurea micranthos Gmel. (= C. stoebe [L.] Sch. -Thell. ssp. micranthos [Gmel] Hay.). 2n = 36 (4 x). Budapest, Vadaskert, in a shrubby, grassy site. An Eurasian-Mediterranean species. Into the C. stoebe group belong further C. rhenana Bor. and C. maculosa Lam., — the chromosome number of this latter is also 2n = 36 (Moore et F r a n k t o n), so we establish the basic number 9 for the group. Hybrids are possible, that is, known, among the species of different basic numbers. 38. Scorzonera purpurea L. n = 7 (2 x). Budapest, Mt. Sashegy, in a Festuca sulcata — Carex humilis association, on dolomite. A Continental, Eurasian species. 39. Silene parviflora (Ehrh.) Pers. (= S. otites [L.] Wibel. ssp. Hayek). 2n = 24 (2 x). Ágasegyháza, on the Great Plains between the Danube and the Tisza ; Fenyőfő, Mts. Bakony. In both places, in Festucetum vaginatae associations. It is a small species with a smaller stature and flowers on sandy plains of S. otites, of a Continental range. 40. Minuartia frutescens (Kit.) Tuzson. 2n = 32 (4 x). Szarvaskő, in Poa scabra — Festuca glauca associations, on gabbro. A pygmy shrub of acidic rocks, a Pannonian- a Carpathian endemism. We know the chromosome numbers of but a very few species within this genus, the basic numbers are 8 and 13. 41. Corispermum nitidum Kit. n = 9. Fenyőfő, Mts. Bakony, in the association Festucetum vaginatae. A Ponto-Pannonian annual plant of the sands. 42. Eleocharis carniolica 2n = 20 (2 x). Mts. Sátor, near Pálháza, in the mud vegetation of the Komlóska brook. A Carpatho-Balcanic therophyton. 43. Festuca valesiaca Sehl. var. tenuis (Hackel) Krajina. 2n = 14 (2 x). Nitra (CzechosloA^akia), Mt. Zoborhegy ; Aggtelek, above the Cave ; Bodvarákó, Mt. Ostromos ; in all three places on limsetone, on karstic plateaus. The species F. valesiaca has two chromosome varieties, a diploid and a tetraploid, the latter was first published by Felföld y. The diploid has short (15 cm), thin, bristle-like leaves, of a smaller stature than the tetraploid. Of the known varieties of F. valesiaca, the description of two conforms with the tetraploid, whilst the above name previously given is in accordance with the diploid. The range of the two chromosome varieties, their oecological requirements and taxonomical evaluation necessitate further study. Bibliography: Arènes, J.: Les Centaurées de la sous-section Jacea.
