Baksay, L.: The cytotaxonomy of the species Chrysanthemum maximum Ram., Centaurea montana L., Serratula lycopifolia (Vill.) Kern., and Bupleurum falcatum L., ranging in Europe

species was taken for sure in the Seslerieto-Fagetum, still we found the diploid ; on the other hand, we have collected it in the same Range (the Mts. Bükk) on rocky valley slopes and, aside of the above mentioned association, on limestone rocks of a western exposition (Csobánka, Dévény), then in half-shadowy rocky places of Quercetum pabescentis (Com. Nyitra, Czechoslovakia). Even herbarium data indicate that it prefers shadowy and rocky sites, fissures in the rocks, the slopes of gorges. According to observations in gardens, B. dilatatum flowers about 7 days earlier, its leaves are thicker, they stand more erect and are 15—20 cm long. B. falcatum, raised in shadowy localities, never attains the length and the breadth of the leaves of B. dilatatum, they remain the same as those of a plant grown in a sunny site. Owing to the extreme variation of B. falcatum L. s. 1., it were very important to examine this large species from cytological, oecological and phytogeographical points of view in the whole area of its range. It may have numerous differentiated oecotypes, which we do not know well enough. It is highly probable, — even though the observations of the present author are very scanty — that B. dilatatum is wanting in the association Festucetum sulcatae-vallesiacae, its place being taken by B. falcatum. Its range, oecological claims and phytocoenokgical behaviour demand further studies. Bibliography: 1. Aichinger, E.: Vegetationskunde der Karawanken (Jena 1933). — 2.
