Horváth, L.: The ornis of the Mecsek Mountains based on oecologic and oologic researches

Mecsek, 4. July, 1950 : I presume its nesting on this fact. Besides, it must be a very rare bird in the Mecsek which is the more interesting as Agárdi found it rather frequent in the woods of the hilly region east of the Mountains. 12. Sylvia a. atricapilla L. Blackcap. — I found its clutch of five on the southern side of the Misina, 7. May, 1946, and another, 9 May. I succeeded to find a third clutch of five eggs on the northern side of the Tubes, Pécsi Mecsek, 23.. May ; and another clear clutch of five at the Lapis refuge, 28. May. I have found another nest with five eggs, and a clutch of two in the same place, 1. June. Its old nests became visible after the autumn falling of leaves in the whole Mecsek ; they were very frequent. One of the most common birds of the Mountains. 13. Turdus ericetorum philomelos Brehm. Song Thrush. — I found it nesting in the Jánosi woods, Middle Mecsek, 23. April, 1944. I have discovered also a fresh clutch of five eggs at the Árpádtető, in the Middle Mecsek, 15. April, 1948 ; with further clutches.in the Réka and Pusztabánya woods, After the autumnal defoliation I have found everywhere old nests in the whole territory of the Mecsek. Similarly to the Blackcap it is also a very frequent and generally distributed bird of the Mecsek. I have observed a flock of twenty birds at the village Patacs on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 28. March, 1946. 14. Luscinia m. megarhyncha Brehm. Nightingale. — Rather frequent. Its song is often heard around the woods. I did not find its nest, but it must be a common breeding bird in the above mentioned places. 15. Picus c. canus Gm. — Grey-headed Green Woodpecker. — I have observed one specimen at the Mandulás in "the Pécsi Mecsek, 1. February, 1946. 16. Cuculus c. canorus L. Cuckoo. — This bird occurs in the whole Mecsek but is nowhere frequent. I have found one egg in the nest of a Red-backed Shrike beside one of its eggs on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, Western Mecsek, 10. June, 1945. 17. Accipiter n. nisus L. Sparrow-hawk. — I found it nesting on the southern side of the Misina, 13. May, 1948 : its clutch consisted of five fresh eggs. Data of observations : one specimen on the southern side of the Misina (1. and 16. February, 1946) ; and two specimens in the same place, 20. Febr. I have observed one also t here, 19. March ; and one near Patacs in the Western Mecsek, 28. March. Therefore it is a rare bird in the Mecsek. 18. Columba p. palumbus L. Wood pigeon. —This is not a bird of the Mecsek. I have never seen it nesting, nor even met with it in breeding season. It was seen once or twice during migration, but I lack the necessary precise data. 19. Streptopelia t. turtur L. Turtledove. — A very frequently nesting bird in the whole Mecsek. I found it nesting in the Western Mecsek, 11. June, 1944. Some further data may be given : 30. May, 15. June, 1945, 8. July, 1952. (Pécsi Mecsek). Many nests are to be seen after the falling of leaves. 20. Scolopax r. rusticola L. Woodcock. — I have seen one in the evening hours near Kisújbánya in the Eastern Mecsek, 23. March, 1946. Another specimen took to wings around noon west of Zobák in the Middle Mecsek, 7. April, 1946. I have further observed one in the Réka valley, Eastern Mecsek, 6. July, 1950. I have not found it nesting but owing to the latter datum I take its incubation here for sure. Habitat IV. Middle-aged Timber 1. Certhia f. familiáris L. Creeper. — It occurs sporadically in the whole Mecsek, indeed, it may be said to be rather frequent in older woods around the springs. I found a clutch of five west of Zobák in the Middle Mecsek, 13. April, 1947 ; and a clutch of six around Kantavár in the Pécsi Mecsek, 18. April. It was nesting here again, 14. April, 1948, and I found another one near the former, 26. April : its clutch was of the rarely occurring seven eggs. Data of observations : I saw one specimen in the Jakabhegy, 5. December, 1943 ; one again here, 9. January, 1944; and seven near Mánfa in the northern part of the Pécsi Mecsek, 3. March, 1944. There was one bird on the Nagyhegy, Eastern Mecsek (24. March), on the Mátépart, Eastern Mecsek (25. March), and finally, near Zobák, Middle Mecsek, 7. April, 1946. 2. Sitta europaea caesia Wolf. Nuthatch. — It occurs sporadically everywhere in the mountains ; in some places it is a very common bird. I found it nesting in the Lámpás valley, Pécsi Mecsek, 15. April, 1947; and a whole clutch of seven eggs around Kantavár, Pécsi Mecsek, 8 April, 1948. Once I have observed its nesting also in a nest-box. Data of observations : one specimen on the southern side of the Misina, 19. October, 1943 ; two on the Jakabhegy, 9. January, 1944; one near Püspökszentlászló, Eastern Mecsek, 25. March; three on the southern slopes of the Jakabhegy, 20. January, 1946 ; one on the northern side of the Pécsi Mecsek, 2. February ; two on the southern side of the Misina, 16. Febr. ; three on the southern side of the Zengő, Eastern Mecsek, 17. Febr. ; three on the southern side of the Jakabhegy, 20. Febr. ; three in the Middle Mecsek (Árpádtető and Zobák), 23. Febr. : three on the Nagyhegy, Eastern Mecsek, 24. Febr. ;
