logical distinctions of the V. v. leucopus BLYTH are well described by BJALINICKI-BIEULA in his excellent work, and, therefore I shall not dwell on the question here again. Geographical distribution. According to K. A. SATUNIN „this small fox is spread in a great quantity on the low steppes of the eastern Transcaucasus, consequently along the rivers Kura and Araks. It dwells usually in sterile, dry, deserted localities, and feeds nearly exclusively on different small rodents, very numerous in these parts, especially on the Microtus socialis PALL. I have also observed it hunting hares." I have in my collection five skulls of this very interesting fox, kindly given to me by N. D. Type locality. — The basin of Gölsk of the district of Karsk. Diagnosis. — Colouring of back is of a very light whitish or of a yellowish white with a reddish hue. Broad stripe along the spine is of a light reddish tint brightly speckled with white; Under-fur of the back is of a dusky-grey, partly with long light-brownish endings; basal parts of hair are of a dusky grey, further, brownish or white, with a black, sometimes a reddish tip. A quantity of black hair is dispersed all over, but not striking ones eye. On the anterior part of the body, in the region of the shoulders and on the neck the under-fur is of a pure white. The hair down to half of the spine is of a dusky grey, and then of a bright red. The red stripe of the spine passes over to the upper surface of the tail, but lower down gradually gets paler and disappears. Belly part is white with a slightly transparent light grey colour of basal under­fur. Throat and anterior part of neck are greyish. The posterior part of the tail is covered with yellowish white hair and the sides and under-part with greyish-white hair with black tips, which are extremely long on the latter third of the tail. The bridge of the nose, as well as the space between and around the eyes and the forehead are red. The hair under the eyes is white with bright red tips. Lips, cheeks and sides of the neck are of a pure white. Throat and breast are of a greyish white.
