884 O. J. DR FEJBK VARY b) Description. Before setting forth the results of my immediate observations concerning the Hungarian material here described, a brief allusion must be made with regard to the Pikermi remains dealt with by GAUDRY (op. cit .) and WEITHOFER (op. cit.) in their above mentioned publications. The vertebra figured by GAUDRY agrees so closely with the Csarnóta-fragment Fig. 7. f Varanus marathonensis WEITH. Dorsal vertebra from ventral and lateral aspect. — Nat. size. — Authois pend rawing after Mr. FORMANT'S original figure in GAUDRY, Anim. foss. ef Géol. de l'Attique, Atlas, Pl. LX, Figs. 3 & 4. as not to require any special notice in this place, I thus simply refer to Textfig. 7 as to the reproduction of the excellent French zoologist's original drawing. The cranial fragments of WEITHOFER'S type-specimen deserve however special attention, a part of them as yet being the unique fragments of their kind. A) Skull. 1. -Maxillary. (Textfig. 86 & Pl. II, Fig.l) The Csarnóta-fragment obtained by Dr. KORMOS, though considerably robuster, seems to have many structural affinities to the corresponding part of the maxillary of Varanus griseus BAUD. (Pl. II, Fig. 2.) It is somewhat difficult to make out the morphologic characters in Mr. WEITHOFER'S figure ; he supposes the Pikermi maxillary to be different in some points from the mamillaries of recent Monitors; according to him 1 «. .. ist der ganze Knochen etwas kürzer und gedrungener, dann besitzt er als obere Begrenzung nicht eine mehr oder weniger scharfe Kante, sondern ist hier breit. 1 Op. cit. p. 291.
