Necromurus, FILHOL, Sur les Kept. foss. des Phosph. de Quercy, Bull. Soe. Philom.. Paris, 1876. (After NOPCSA, op. cit.). Palaeovaranus Cayluxi, FILHOL, op. cit., in 1877, p, 268, Pl. 26, Fig. 434 & 445 - 446; ZITTEL, op. cit., 1887- 90, p. 609, Fig. 540; DE STEFANO, op. cit., 1903, p. 407, Tav. IX. Fig. 8 (& î Tav. X. Palaeovaranus Filholi, DE STEFANO, op. cit., 1903, p. 408, Tav. IX, Fig. 16 & 19, Tav. X, Fig. 3, 6, 8-10, (? 11), 12-13, & 15, 18»; NOPCSA, op. cit., 1908, p. 43. For want, of original material and obliged thus to rely upon descriptions and figures — I cannot naturally enlarge upon a detailed characterization of this species, as regards which I therefore merely allude to the literature above mentioned, as well as to what has been said above regarding the generic value of «Palaeovaranus.)) For comparison's sake some morphological characters will however be referred to in treating of T\ Hofmanni* All I shall notice here is that among the fossil Monitors of Europe yet know 7 n, V. Cayluxi FILH. was one of the smaller sized forms, hardly exceeding the size of the recent V. yriseus which approaches or slightly surpasses one metre in length. The femur represented by FILHOL (op. cit.) as that of V. Cayluxi (and referred by LYDEKKER to Placosaurus) seems to indicate how T ever a somewdiat larger size (Textfig. 1); unfortunately 1 15 & 18, and not 15—18, as written by DE STEFANO, op. cit. p. 408.
