Fejérváry, G.J.: Contributions to a Monography on fossil Varanidae and on Megalanidae 16
844 G. j. DK FEJ ÉK VARY Quercy (from strata of the upper Eocene to the lower Miocene) which he determines as belonging to Palaeovaranus, defining the Quercy species under the name of P.Cayluxi. (Rech, sur les Phosph. du Quercy. Études des foss. qu'on y rencontre et spéc. des Mammif., Paris). This Va r a nid together with the before mentioned «Varanus? maryariticeps GERV.» is classed by LYDEKKER (op. cit.) with Placosaurus GERV. (p. 279). In opposition to this, ZITTEL in the III d volume (p. 609) of his extensive «Palaeozoologit» regards Palaeovaranus as constituing a special Vara no id genus, of which he mentions P. Cayluxi EILH. as the only representative. In 1903 Gius. DE STEFANO in Iiis treatise «I Sarui del Quercy appartenenti alia Collezione Rossignol» 1 (p. 404) very rightly refers to the diversity between Placosaurus GERV. and Palaeovaranus EILH., observing that the head and body of Placosaurus is covered with dermal ossifications, whilst Palaeovaranus presents decided Varancid characters, and consequently no dermal ossifications. In 1888 WEITIIOFER describes in his «Beitr. z. Kennt, d. Fauna v. Pikermi» (Beitr. z. Pal. u. Geol. Öst.-Ung. u. d. Orients, Wien u. Leipzig, Bd. VI, p. 291) some cranial remains of a Varanus originating from Pikermi identifying these under the name of Varanus maraihonensis with the Monito r vertebra described by GAUDRY in his mentioned work on the fossil Fauna and Geology of Attica. NOPCSA overlooking WEITHOFER'S publication proposes in 1908 (op. cit.) for the Monitorvertebra described and figured by GAUDRY, the name of «Varanus atticus» which must be thus regarded as a synonym. HOFMANN 2 in 1889, mentions rests of lizards from the Göriach fossil fauna (Miocene) yet notifying his uncertainty as to their systematic position; NOPCSA, in his above cited paper, refers to these as «Varanus sp.». In 1891 Mr. N. MORELLI describes the fragment of a Farcmws-dentary, found with bones of other animals beside the hearth of the Diluvial Man. in the Cave of the Arène Candide (Italy). 3 In 1898 BOGER describes in the II rt part of his «Wirbelthierreste a. d. Dinotheriensande d. bayerisch-schwäb. Hochgeb.» 4 (p. 386—388.) a species of the name of Varanus Hofmanwi, belonging to the genus Varanus, and in 1900 he also publishes photographs of three vertebrae of the same ; 5 this species is from the lower Miocene («Dinotheriensand») of Stätzling.
