JÚLIA TÁTRAI AND LÁSZLO LENGYEL: Archduke Albert († 1621) on the Catafalque: A Picture of Old-New Acquisition

5 UNKNOWN (FLEMISH?) PAINTER. CATAFALQUE OF ARCHDUKE ALBERT IN THE PALACE CHAFE L. BRUSSELS. MUSÉE DE LA VILLE DE BRUXELLES-MAISON DU ROI hands rest on a cushion and hold a crucifix. On the left side of his head is his archducal crown and the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, while a black hat can be seen on his right. The mourners are gathered behind the baldachin: in the first row are members of monastic orders, Franciscans, Dominicans and probably Carmelites. Long candles burn in two tall, sil­ver candlesticks. Opposite the catafalque stands a figure wearing clothes adorned with a coat­of-arms and holding a long staff, while at the side of the catafalque is a kneeling member of the clergy. The identification of these figures will be dealt with at a later point. There is a painting in the collection of the Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles (Museum van het Broodhuis) which was for a long time thought to represent Philip II lying on the catafalque,
