Meaning: His Excellency Archduke Albert, a likeness of our founder Deceased 13 July 1621 In 1923 the painting was included in the catalogue of the Count Jenő Zichy Museum of Budapest under no. 76. with an uncertain attribution. "Karel van Mallery (?) Flemish school. Painter and engraver. Born in 1576 in Antwerp, year of death unknown. (He was still alive in 1630.) He mainly painted history paintings but also worked as an art dealer. The death of Archduke Mbert. H. 86.5, W. 106 cm. Signed by the artist the bottom edge of the picture: C. Mallery. (Inventory number 22 7)." 13 The name Mallery can also be read in the inscription in the middle lower part of the paint­ing: PROII • dOLOR • ECCE ALBERT • FLOS dUCUM OCCVbVIT C. MALLERY OV AIV. dE CA • I. F. (fig. 3) The first two lines of the inscription mean: Oh, what pain Behold Albert, the deceased flower of all princes 3 DETAIL OF F IGT.
