DÉNES GABLER AND ANDRÁS MÁRTON: Head-Pots in the Antiquities Collection

Of the four vases the wide-bodied lagynos (no. 1) whose spout takes the shape of a characterhead —the Idiot (stupidus) type 10 —is the earliest of them. The colour of clay and slip, as well as the workmanship, point to a workshop in western Asia Minor. 11 The use of punched dots to indicate the hair is also customary on pieces made in the East. 12 The decoration on the shoulder is of a type often said to be a laurel wreath; one ought not, however, to ignore another possible model: the pomegranate garland. 13 The closest parallel for this particular piece is a lagynos in the collection of the University of Utrecht. 14 Although it was found in Tunisia, this piece certainly came from a workshop in western Asia Minor. The decoration of tongueshaped leaves is characteristic of lagynoi. 15 The proportions attest a connection to more recent pieces belonging to the oinophoros group, a plentiful series of Hellenistic and Roman wine-jugs associated with workshops in southwest Asia Minor and the Aegean island of Cnidus. In vases of this kind, the two halves of the body are equally emphatic, and instead of a topless cone, the profile is rounded with pointed edges. 16 The jug in the shape of a woman's head (no. 2) was not made from the red clay typical of terra sigillata ware from the Navigius workshop (a major centre of North African production: see below); nor is the slip of sigillata type. The white and greyish inclusions in the clay are closest to the clay of Cnidian ware. 17 The structure and proportions of the vase likewise differ from those of Navigius ware, but are strongly reminiscent of Cnidian. Laurel-wreath ornament is common on oinophoroi from Asia Minor. 18 Examples with stamped decoration are known from Pontic vases (e.g. a figure vase in the shape of a young boy's head from a site in Bulgaria). 19 5 SATYR'S-HEAD WINE JUG FROM 11 ENCHIR-ES-SRI RA (CENTRAL TUNISIA)
