JÁNOS GYÖRGY SZILÁGYI: Archaic Pottery from Veii
This type of small footed cup without lid is not Greek in origin, but emerged in Italy from impasto and some bucchero precedents. 38 Its variants were found and still occur in large numbers, mostly in southern Etruria and Latium. 39 In Etruria it was mainly the present unpainted variant 40 which was popular, primarily in the areas of Cerveteri and Veii; 41 the workshop must be sought here, although one or two pieces made the journey north at least as far as Este. 42 Clearly several functions can be imagined: it could have been used for spices or salt at table, 41 or for libations; but the idea that it might have been used as a thymiaterion 44 is unlikely, in the complete absence of traces of burning. It is not impossible that the shape, or at least the variant discussed here, continued older precedents in wood. 45 Since neither the exact find-spot nor the context of the vases is known, very little can be said about the group. About the place of production, all might have been made in Veii, but perhaps with the exception of oinochoe no. 5 none need have been made there. Nor is it impossible that all the pieces originated in the same find, although they need not have. Still, the assumption of a single find is strengthened by the fact that all the pieces can be placed chrono3t ~ *Z *" ^ iám 1 ETRUSCAN GOBLET BUDAPEST. PRIVATE COLLECTION
