JÁNOS GYÖRGY SZILÁGYI: Archaic Pottery from Veii

ETRUSCAN I AR. BUDAPEST. PRIVATE COLLECTION ETRUSCO-CORINTHIAN CUP-K.OTYLE BUDAPEST, PRIVATE COLLETION occurs also in the Faliscan area, Latium, and Campania; in Phase II of the Sala Consilina necropolis examples occur in almost every grave. 3 The floruit of the type falls between the second quarter of the eighth and the first quarter of the seventh century, but some examples have been found in contexts from the end of the seventh century or the early sixth: one such piece, identical in shape to the present one, was found in the left and central chambers of Grave 365 of the Banditaccia-Laghetto necropolis in Cerveteri. 4 2. CUP-KOTYLE. Wheel-made, brownish yellow clay (7.5 YR 6/4-7/4) with brownish red glaze (2.5YR 4/8). Height: 8,9 cm; diameter of mouth: 12,5 cm; diameter of foot: 3,2 cm; width (with handles): 18,25 cm. Restored from many fragments; almost half the lip and a large piece of one side are missing and replaced (pi. 2). Slightly rounded body tapering downwards and widening at the shoulder; at the bottom narrowing sharply into a ring base, slightly but not very visibly profiled and bevelled on the inside. The edge of the lip is vertical and meets the shoulder at a sharp angle; the horizontal handles point upward at an angle. Dark brown glaze on inside of cup, both sides of lip, outer edges of handles, outside of bottom of foot. On the outside under the handles two painted stripes, one wide, one narrow; and on the lower, unpaintain half four thin rays beginning at the foot, whose tops intersect the narrow line beneath the handles.
