Although the contours on the damaged surface of the draw­ing were subsequently reinforced in pen-and-ink, thus reducing the originally more graceful, loose character of the Florentine variant, it is evident that the Florentine and Budapest sheets were drawn by the same hand. The Florentine sheets were first published by Marco Chiarini as autograph drawings by Livio Mehus (1627-1691). It is largely thanks to him and Mina Gregori that the œuvre of this little known Flemish-Florentine painter is now accurately outlined. 14 Besides some records and let­ters that have survived, our chief source for the artist's life is Filippo Baldinucci. 13 There is also a biography in manuscript, from the late seventeenth century, written by Francesco Maria Niccoló Gabburini, who claimed he had relied on the personal accounts of the artist's son, Francesco. 16 Mehus was employed by the Medici from an early age, with shorter or longer breaks, first as a painter and then as the keeper of the ducal collection.
