ANDRÁS MÁRTON AND GYÖRGY NEMES: Corinthian White-Ground Lekythoi
or yellowish-brown. The mouth is indeed small and its side is straighter, but compared to the size of the body it is not much smaller, while the outward-turned rim and the shape of the vessel itself clearly rank it in this group. Other vases with longer and thinner necks also occur in this group: see Palmer 1964, 263, no. 397-5, 400-04, pi. 64-65. The colour of the clay is not decisive: the clay of Corinthian white lekythoi can be greenish (50.860), greenish-yellowish-brown (Luce 1930, 340), light brown (Steiner 1992, N. 1, 391-92, N. 6, 393), pale yellow (British Museum 1969, 12-15.13 and 12-15.4, Cook 1972, 115, pi. XL), reddish-yellow (Steiner 1992, 392, no. 2), light orange (Palmer 1964, 261, no. 392-5) and white (Steiner 1992, 392, no. 3). Cf. G. S. Merker, "The Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore. Terracotta Figurines of the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman Periods", Corinth XVIII: iv, Princeton, New Jersey 2000, 12-13. A. Steiner excluded from the group lekythos no. 4 from the North Cemetery Grave 396 because it is decorated with a palmette on the body. However, H. Palmer established her groups based on the shape of the vase and not their decoration. Regarding its shape, the lekythos clearly belongs to Palmer's group i. See Steiner 1992, 393, 395, fig. 4.
