ANDRÁS MÁRTON AND GYÖRGY NEMES: Corinthian White-Ground Lekythoi

precisely the shape of the foot which points to the heterogeneity of each potter's work within the group. 62 Black glaze is found on the mouth, the handle and the lower part of the body, and also on the rim of the foot. 63 A slip was used in this group as well to cover the light coloured clay. 64 In one case funnel pattern in black decorate the neck (Budapest, 50.860). We find red palmettes on the shoulder and an upright red palmette on the body. 65 In one instance a polychrome palmette appears, 66 in another an ivy pattern (which motif is otherwise characteristic of group i) to which egg pattern was added on the lower part of the body. 67 Among the vases belonging to this group, the painted figurai decoration is best preserved on the Budapest vase: a duel scene set in what looks like a cemetery. Vase no. 2. from the North Cemetery grave 416 has traces of red and blue paint, and a blue ribbon on its body. 68 The latter may also refer to a tomb stele, but it is possible that it appears as a free-standing ribbon inside the pictorial field. A number of other traces of polychrome, perhaps figurai, decoration are indecipherable. 69 PALMER'S GROUP III 70 The group is characterized by a deep, straight-walled conical mouth, narrow sloping shoulder, and a swollen cylindrical body. Some model for their tall, thick disk feet can be found in those of marble grave lekythoi, and the shape of the body also recalls known examples from the late fifth century BC. 1 Regarding the details of potter's w r ork, the vases irom group iii are the most homogenous. They arc often carelessly turned, and have an asymmetrical and slanting appearance. The shoulder is decorated with rays in black, sometimes fired to red, 72 lotus-buds in red, 3 red palmettes 74 , and an interchanging design of red lotus-buds and three-leafed palmettes in black. - The body is decorated with a large upright palmette, or w r ith horizontal palmettes. 76 Polychrome painted decoration can be found on four vases, although their patterns arc so worn that their designs cannot be determined. The vases from this group carry the best preserved figurai scenes: a red-haired woman in a white dress sitting on a yellow chair; a red-haired figure looking to the right; a black-haired woman looking to the right holding an open box;' 8 and a composition of a red-haired woman wearing a blue chiton next to a standing figure. 79 On a lekythos in Nantes, a woman dressed in a transparent chiton is depicted. She stands to the left of a tomb stele, stretching out her right arm and fingers in front of the stele.
